The bite (I have several actually) has a small puncture/bite hole and then a huge area of hot, red, hard swelling - about 10 cm in diameter. Not surprisingly, they are very itchy, and I would like some ideas as to what kind of bite it is. I have a very large pond in my garden that has loads of insects on and around it. Please share your knowledge and ideas as these bites are "bugging" me - excuse the pun!

best thing to do in this case would be to consult an entomology web site. If you remember the description of the bug, try doing a search on it. You may also be able to contact a local gardening group, as odds are, someone there may have experienced the same bite.

Sounds like a horse fly bite, they are very itchy, have you got some lavender oil in the house, it's great for any bites, soothing and reduces the swelling. hope they go soon.

They could be Mosquito bites, if your near a pond they are probably hatching due to the heat & making you the first meal!!
You can get creams & stuff for the sores from your local chemist which will ease the itching.Hope this helps.

it's a zyngorumpholi.. go look it up. Yes you should be worried its the family bug of an african jungle fly. If you don't get it treated more f*ckers will breed in the wounds. I've been bitten on a recent tour through africa.

I would guess it's a Horse Fly, did it look like a house fly only about 10 times the size?

be careful. it could be a mosquito, and you know about the west-nile virus. Just go to the doctor and get it checked out.
