a cupcake is a small cake, but a muffin is actually considered a quick bread (you know, like banana bread etc.). though they have the same shape, the process of making them is a little different. With a cupcake you can mix & mix it without ruining it ... but with muffins, you only want to mix it until the dry ingredients are moistened or it will be YUCK!

A cupcake is sweeter and fluffier. I usually has frosting on it. A muffin is more bready and heavier. It is more breakfast food and a cupcake is more of a dessert food. They can both be delicious and come in assorted flavors.

A cupcake is cake with frosting (a mini cake if you will). They come in all sorts of cake flavors, chocolat, vanilla, etc. A muffin is typically more dense cake and has fruit or nuts in it or on it.

Muffins are generally healthier, and usually contain less sugar and some kind of fruit or bran.
Cupcakes are small cakes, and generally contain much more sugar and are iced.
