Snipers are specialist enlisted men, but there are probably officers who have been promoted from enlisted sniper ranks.

What he has to know are his assignment orders.

Secure a mountain pass, delay or neutralize a convoy of enemy vehicles, that sort of thing.

The rest is "simply" lining up the cross hairs.

He has to know that, unlike a regular infantryman, what he is doing is essentially an act of murder. When a rifleman fires on the enemy, the enemy has an oppurtunity to fire back, unless you really get the jump on him. A sniper fires from such long distances that the target will be on the ground before the enemy even hears the report of his rifle.

A sniper has to be able to look another human being in the eyes and still be able to pull the trigger.

One of my drill instructors at Parris Island was a sniper in Desert Storm and Somalia, with 15 kills, 8 confirmed by a spotter. The guilt finally wore him down and he received a medical discharge in 1998. He had killed men in combat, but those didn't bother him. Because in combat, he told us, it was kill or be killed. But as a sniper, his targets never even knew he was there.

Like I said before. As a Marine Sniper myself, the course in Quantico goes like this.

Candidates are chosen from Enlisted Infantry ranks MOS 0311, or 03 in general.
Candidate must be a master at land navigation, in exemplary physical condition and have an excellent memory.
Scout/Sniper School centers more about cover and concealment, land nav, and target ID. Firing a weapon is only a small part of the course, although windage and elevation have been the cause of many failing the course. As part of the "final exam" as it were, you will perform a "Stalk", that is, you will attempt to locate a target, ID said target, close to within less than 500 meters and fire 2 shots, all without being located. Those who master all of these techniques, will earn the title Scout/Sniper.

Officers are not snipers, it's the enlisted soldiers. What must a sniper know before pulling the trigger? Did he calculate the windage correctly.

No the sniper does not have to be an officer. He must know that he is engaging a legitimate threat before pulling the trigger.

snipers are enlisted soldiers. and it takes a truely unique person to be a sniper. Its not easy. yea it sounds like fun and all but a sniper well see and do things that are extremely hard and different from standard warfare. A sniper needs to know that the people that he will kill are more than willing to kill him and his freinds and that he is doing the right thing

Many snipers....most snipers will be enlisted men and not officers.
A sniper will simply realize that he is doing his part in defending his country, and will also realize that the person that he is taking out is a person that would kill him and all others from the US given the opportunity!

Hopefully you are talking about the military, as sniping is definitely a "no no" in the civilian environment.
