There are any number of groups that will help you prepare for your Airframes & Powerplants certification (clarification for anyone that doesn't know A&P) Being stationed at Cherry Point, NC, we could go to the training building and take classes with one of the colleges that set up there, or through correspondence. Once you get to your command, ask your training officer. Also, getting the A&P, as well as an FCC liscense, plus the FCC radar certification if you are in avionics, will not only look good on a resume when and if you leave the coast guard, it can also be entered into your service record and will be seen as good initiative and a desire to improve yourself come promotion time.

I served five years in Marine aviation, and I heartily regret not getting my A&P and FCC certifications.

That's a question to ask the recruiter. Be careful, though, and do some thorough digging, and ask lots of followup questions - recruiters are under the gun right now to get people signed up. Several branches of the service are missing their quotas. Some recruiters may promise you the sun, moon, stars, and everything in between to get you enlisted. Then you find out later that they lied.

You might also call the FAA and doublecheck what the recruiter tells you, at least on this part of it.

when I got my a&p license in 1986, there was a man in our class that was retired air force. The classes that he took in the military would NOT transfer over to the civilian world. Of course, he knew what he was doing where we had to learn, but he had to go thru the motions anyway. GOOD LUCK

Probably not. Cross-training outside your Coast Guard job is not likely

What you will get is.... Never mind there are children reading this forum.
