It's sad. I'm agnostic (an Atheist without a Dogma) and I ask myself this question all the time, except my question is, Why do people criticize each other this way? The answer is simple. People are flawed, and regardless of their faith we should be tolerant of them. I would not, although I don't believe your faith and find it offensive in some ways, try to change your views as you are clearly happy with them. I ask this sincerely (not trying to sound like a condescending jerk) but have you read the Bible for yourself? It's may make you understand their points. I hope that answers you question.

Have you ever heard about the squeaky wheel getting the grease? It's something like that. Don't paint us all with the same brush. Some people make a lot of noise and I think you're just reading those questions because you find them shocking - which is what they want.
But there's a lot of it on both sides. I wonder why you don't notice the hateful and venomous Christians?

Firstly, your line about 'sarcasm' is sarcastic in and of itself. Just incase you missed that...
Secondly I find your question to be full of venom and hate...maybe not hate so much as contempt and condemnation.
Well, Christians tend to try to convert people. Everyone who has come to the conclusion that Jesus isn't the Christ find it as offensive as the Christians do that one would suppose such a concept. Athiests don't believe in a christian god so they see the widespread bandwagon as diminishing towards our ulitimate goal as humans so it is upsetting to them. Also, you are looking for substantial answers on the internet. This tells me enough about you to know that you aren't even serious. You are simply opinionated. Most of the answers are coming from people who don't have productive things that they would rather occupy their time with, not to mention at least 60% of these people are under the age of 20. And if you hope to ascertain any reasonable input from minors about something as serious and substantial as GOD and LIFE...you have quite simply come to the wrong place.
The intolerance comes from the close-minded belief in a diety which I would estimate only 20% of christians have even researched logically. One book written by ancient men is hardly substantial.
The ignorance comes purely from the belief itself in such a creature.
And the judgemental aspect of Christiandom defines itself.
It's quite a silly question unless posed by a Christian.
I hope this has been helpful, but I have a feeling that it will be seen as blasphemy and someone will end up preying for my eternal soul.
Good Luck in life..yer gonna need it.

Well, most self-proclaimed "Christian" leaders and churches do actually come across just as "intolerant, ignorant and judgmental" as the much-maligned Pharisees denounced in the Bibles that these people claim to live their lives by...that is not to say that they are actually as intolerant as they come across, but many of these people do come across that way when they speak or when they are portrayed in the media...
In my opinion, many people in America have come to equate "Christianity" with living the middle-class "American Dream," that is to say that "Christian" = "Middle Class/Suburban lifestyle/ideals" at least in their minds...and if that is their mindset, then anyone who either rejects, or doesn't fit neatly into the middle class American model, is also going to reject, or feel rejected by Christianity.
In my experience, many people in this country who identify as either Atheist or Agnostic are, in reality, reacting to a dislike of all things middle class/suburban and since Christianity has come to be identified with middle class/suburban lifestyle and ideals, then they also reject Christianity....
Of course, the paradox is that Christianity was not supposed to be a religion for the middle class, as we all should know, Christianity is supposed to be a religion that espouses love for all mankind, especially for the poor and mistreated... My suggestion is that if you really want to be a good Christian, then do good deeds....feed the hungry, clothe the naked, etc... and let God take care of people who "spew hate and venom..."

i guess what i am trying to say is, thank you yahoo. i dont feel so alone now! lol i cant believe how many people out there share my beliefs..... or non-belief! however you wanna say it. lets just try to remember how it makes us feel when these biblebangers force stuff down out throats, and dont get cought up on their side of the fence.

Let me relate a story.
My wife answered the door one Saturday morning and there were two Mormons, in their suits, looking neat and tidy and they wanted to discuss The Book of Mormon with her.
She said that she was an atheist.
One of them looked stunned and then launched into a diatribe about how she was damned to hell and her soul would burn in the fiery pit of hell for all eternity.
At this very website, I have seen letters from "Christians", deriding all other faiths (or non-faiths).
I know that it is an individual decision and not all Christians are like that, but there is evidence that numerous Christians are here to make decisioons for God on who goes to heaven and who doesn't.
I do not want to believe that "religious tolerance" is an oxymoron.

I hear a lot of spiteful comments, ie just reading a question about a lad asking about his brothers suicide, and religious people are saying his brother has gone to hell. How, in any way is this helping his grief??
It is one thing to be religious, which is a personal choice, but not all christains are good people. It takes a lot more than reading the bible and going to church to be that. Yet many religious people don't think it does.

I don't do that.
I just don't agree with questions that aim to force Christianity into us as the sole religion.
I was baptized but I don't believe in Church or the Bible or priests.
Me and God don't need intermediaries.
Also, if I do something wrong I try to correct it and prevent it from happening again.
I don't go running to church and pray zillions of Hail Marie's and clear my conscience.
I know lots of people who are always doing bad stuff and then go to mass and are great Catholics!
Sorry if it sounded rude and ironic.

I do not spew hate and venom at all.
I just consider religious beliefs as naive, at best.
So, I feel that people who have strong religious convictions are communicating from a faulty foundation, and therefore, flawed logic.

I obviously don't say that about all xians.
But the ones who want to deny gay rights, beleive that good non-believers go to hell, and are hypocrites about their religion ARE intolerant, ignorant, and judgemental.
Also the ones who believe that their pregnancies, health, wealth, etc.. are blessings from god, they tick me off too, sorry.
