There is symbolism and actual. The question is: how do you distinguish actual from symbolic? If the language seems figurative, then it could very well be symbolic. However, be careful, the creation account appears to many as symbolic when it is actually literal.
Check Revelation 17. Here it talks of a woman riding a beast. This is symbolic language.

God's years is a 1000 year day. 2Pet.3:8; Rev.20:1-6[ to save all];
Adam was created perfect, his first day would be a 1000 year day, he would die in the day that he sinned, He sinned before he had any offsprings.
930, 912, 910, 905, 895, 365, 962, 969, 777, 950 to Noah in a life sustaining earth, then came the flood and destroyed the life sustaining earth, but there was no life to sustain, so we have a temporary life, with the promise of a SAVIOR. All made new. 2Pet.3:13; Isa.65:17; 66:22; Rev.2:7; 21:1-5; Luke 23:43;
Rev.20:1-6,12,13; In 1000 years all LOST will be SAVED into a new heavens and a new earth or that which was before Eden is restored,
1Cor,15:22; As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

There is symbolism through out the Bible...But that God placed mankind here is not a debatable question for those of The Christian Faith.... EXACTLY how he did it is not known... But he had to start some where and the story of Adam and Eve is quite plausable given God can do what God wants with His creation.
By the time Adam and eve were placed on the Earth all other formations had taken their course and all was as it should be... A day was a day and a year was a year...as we know it now.
I have a bit different take on the subject if you care to read at:

Time is slowing down. The difference between a year as we know it today and when Adam lived could be as much as 5 minutes. A year back then was as long as it is now, except for a very few minutes. 930 years is 930 years. God made man to live forever. The fall changed everything.

Without getting into the religious stuff - birthdates and such were poorly recorded if at all. Calendars were certainly not like today, although they did keep track of the moon phases fairly early on and probably were doing so in the 3000 BC time frame estimated for the early Bible.
Anyone who was old did not have anyone around who remembered their birth, and so few made it to old age that they probably could not have any idea of how old they were.
Therefore, the long life spans in the Bible could be interpreted any way you want. Someone who made it to 60 or 70 years old would be very unlikely to know how old they were at that time period.

Back then a year was about the time it took the earth to revolve around the sun. Kinda like now.
930 years means 930 years.

The length of a year has not changed since God created time for men. Men have changed the calender quite often, but you can trust the ages that God gives in his word. Jesus loves you.

A year was still the same length, the reason Adam was able to live so long is because he is a FICTIONAL CHARACTER.
