A lot of the prophets claimed such lineage. According to one account of the Bible, Jesus is descended from David - through Joseph! (Yes, there's a small problem there) but according to another account, through Mary.
I guess that almost every society was a monarchy then, so it seemed to give these prophets a kind of 'legitimacy' if they could show their descent from other big figures. The Japanese Emperors used to be able to trace their descent back to the gods, after all!
As one person said, however, there's no proof that Abraham actually existed. In my opinion, it's doubtful he did, because there are just too many legends out there from neighbouring cultures that are older and have too much in common with the Abraham story. Seems he was just a kind of 'founding father' for the Jews stitched together from various other myths and legends.
And don't mind the other people's ridiculous 'if you're an atheist, why do you care?' nonsense either. Mind you, with your username, I guess you get that a lot! My avatar shows my belief about God quite clearly but nobody ever calls me on it because I guess too few people recognise the symbol!

the claim is likely correct. They put a lot of effort into keeping track of who was descended from who back then, both recording to the best media they had available and by oral tradition. If you check the historical parts of the bible like judges, genesis and kings you find an awful lot of ink about who begat whom. And this concern with family ties carries on throughout the book.
This is much similar to how Europe has managed to keep track of the Royal Houses through their histories. It should also be kept in mind that all these people named in the bible are related in some way to the ruling classes, and the Idea that many get of simple peasants is not correct. The story might call some one a wanderer in the wilderness, but the person they are referring to might be a desert Prince, and the head of a large nomadic tribe with wealth and military might, totally related to the powerful families, and an ally of some and a threat to others.
Suggested further reading would be Jewish Antiquities by Josephus. Your librarian might be able to find a copy in English, it was written in Latin about 35ad

If you are a TRUE ATHEIST, you wouldn't concern your self with such a mundane question. (The Holy Bible does not mention Islam nor Muhammed, at least the version I read. It does state that the Hebrew nation is from the seed of Abraham, who begat Ishmael and Issac.) If you are a TRUE ATHEIST, you are in for quite a surprise at the moment of your death. A TRUE ATHEIST does not ask questions that pertain to God, the Bible, etc. I suspect that you are not a TRUE ATHEIST, due to the nature of your question and are trying to sound "HIP" or sophisticated. Where you spend Eternal Life is much more important.

Not any yet. I read in a newspaper article a few months ago that they're experimenting with this genetics program that can trace your ancestry back a millenium or two. Some Canadian guy is the descendant of Genghis Khan. So maybe in another few years they'll stumble upon someone (or a few people) who can piece together this type of question.

You can read details of Muhammed's geneology on Wikipedia ... it's not complete, as one might expect, and much of the information prior to Muhammed's life was passed down orally.

Yes he is from the lineage from Ibrahim (pbuh). Ibrahim had 2 sons, Ishaq and Ishmail, Muhammad's lineage is from Ishmail and jews lineage is from Ishaq. This is what history tells us.

There is no proof Abraham ever existed. This way all might be right - nobody knows anything for sure. Only faith.

in the past Arabs knew their family roots very well, they used to boast each about his family, so they knew if a person has let's say ( noble) roots or not ,, and Mohammad (may Allah's peace and mercy be upon him) was a decent of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) also called the father of prophets,,,,,, prophet Mohammad (may Allah's peace and mercy be upon him) was from his son Ismael's (peace be upon him) side,,, still their is a huge time gap between them, but as i said they used to know their blood lines very will......... and as Mohammad (may Allah's peace and mercy be upon him) said it then you should believe it, as any sensible person would when he hears news from someone whom he never heard told lies...
