I think they probably had an idea they would get some type of liquid. Since the cows' udders resemble women's nipples it wouldn't take much to make the connection especially seeing the calves partake of the nourishment. From cave days on people had to experiment with plants, animals, fruits, etc. since they had to survive. I'm sure there were many guinea pigs who didn't make it but human kind is so inquisitive that the quest for new things and experimentation will never cease.

I would think it was a woman whom may have given birth to her own child, and perhaps didn't quite have enough milk to offer her baby. Watching a cow feed it's young, she may have gone to it out of desperation..
Everything is done with a reason.. and purpose.

I have never thought drinking milk was natural! Can you imagine nuzzling up to a cow in the Field??? EEEWWWW

My guess is that the person observed a calf nursing and figured if it was good enough for the calf, it was good enough for him!
