All the U.S. citizens want to do, is protect the standard of living we have worked towards. To let illegal immigrants into the U.S. , and destroy it.

The Pro-Illegals belive that the only way to do this, is let them enter the country, and do what ever they want. That would be disaster. Think about what our future would be like if we just opened the boarders, and let them all run in, America would be destroyed.

V : Ok , I never remember a head of lettuce costing any where close to 8$, besides I dought that would ever happen. I do belive prices will go up, but I also know that to keep economic balance , companies would need to run closer to the line of cost VS. profits. In the begining they will try to, run prices up, but we will get back on track.

America will become stronger from it.

things won't be economically stable when I have to buy $8 lettuce heads.

BTW, no one is talking about opening up the borders, you radical.
Smart terrorists who come into this country LEGALLY are more of a threat, don't you agree?

RESPONSE
You missed the point completely -- they don't cost $8 NOW because illegals are picking them, allowing growers to sell them for $1. What do you think will happen when we replace that low wage worker with a legal who costs more to employ? The consumer gets stuck with the cost. (Obviously $8 is just an exaggerated number.)

But even if the increase in cost is marginal (which it may be since I'm not an economist), when the labor pool increases (with legals or illegals), our nation's gross domestic product increases.

And when low cost workers are gone, industries may close or move out of the country. This lowers our GDP.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against keeping illegals out, but you must consider all economic cause and effect. Use an economic rationale for your argument, as opposed to a racially motivated one.

Without illegal aliens, the price of agricultural products and other goods and services will NOT soar. The definitive study on this subject is the University of Iowa's "How Much Is That Tomato?" The study concludes that 'since labor is such a small component of the end-price of agricultural products (which includes price to the growers, transportation costs, processing /storage costs, grocers' profit, etc.), using minimum wage workers instead of illegal aliens would increase prices of agricultural products by approximately 3 percent in the summer and 4 percent in the winter ... hardly the making of $10 heads of lettuce, $25 hamburgers, $1,000 per night Days Inn hotel rooms like the pro-illegal alien lobby claims. Consumers are NOT benefiting from lower labor costs. Again, it's CEOs and business owners who benefit from taxpayer subsidies for their illegal alien workers. The Big Three automakers say they moved so many jobs to Mexico because their labor costs are 80 percent less than in America. Anybody notice the price of new cars spiraling downward under NAFTA?

I agree. The prices might go up as an excuse-but they will come right back down. Look it is not the first time America has had trouble-we have had our share. But something has to be done----we are going in the red now-big time. Our States are borrowing from each other there isn't enough to pay for all who use the benefits-and adding more isn't helping. Hospitals closing. Do we want that--No.
Close the borders-sent some troops we have right here in the US (we have plenty here) put the fence up. Get it done. Or we will all lose what we have. And so many will be hurt.

Just imagine if Pennsylvania "closed it's borders" to New Jersey.

Just imagine if Collier County "closed it's borders" to Lee County.

Just imagine if 5th Street "closed it's borders" to 4th Street.

There is no difference between the above examples and the U.S. & Mexico. Closing borders does nothing to protect the standard of living. It only hinders it.

Immigrants have INCREASED the standard of living in America.

It's scary to even think how much our material well-being would suffer were immigrants prohibited from entering the country.

Actually the reverse is true. Prices on a lot of items where illegal immigrants make up a lot of the workforce would skyrocket. Either due to no workers or having to pay teh workers a higher wage. How do you feel about paying $20/lb for oranges?

I grow my own lettuce, thank you. And I'll happily pay more for other things if it means people that are here legally get a job and a decent living wage.
