My 4 year old gets scared when he hears thunder. Even if it is in the distance and the weather isn't bad.

Got a rug in your house? If so, exaggerate rubbing your soles and then have your 4 year old watch as you touch a metal doorknob. Or, get a 12 volt battery and attach wires to the positive and negative posts. Then, rub them together so they spark.
When your 4 year old starts to get tired of your elaborate scheme to try to explain positive and negative charges, he will have forgotten entirely about the thunder. Your job is done.

What I told my son(who is 5 now) is that God and the Angels are Bowling. The thunder is the ball rolling down the lane and lighting is when someone gets a strike. The rain is from the angels crying because they lost again. Worked very well for my self and my son. Give it a try see what happens. Good Luck. Let me know how it turns out.

EDUCATE HIM! My 7 year old son used to be so afraid of any storm. We took him to the "storm spotters" operation center to show him how they track storms, they always know where the lightning is etc. we also read some books about thunder and being afraid. When storms would come, I'd remind him it's ok to feel scared, and to ask God to send a special angel to protect our home. I think prayer helped him feel like he had some power against the storm. (sorry if you aren't into that) Also, read II timothy 1:7.

Teach him the truth, A 4 year old should be able to grasp basics. Tell him the noise might sound scary by it can;t hurt him. also tell him that as long as he is inside the house (or other building) or in the car is is safe from the storm.

I have 3 kids over 4 and it worked for all of them

I had the same problem when my kids were little...I told them the truth about thunder and what it was in a way that they could understand. I used static electricity and the little crack that it makes when you get shocked, as the example. Then I told them, that's what it was but alot bigger. After that they started to look forward to the crack after the lighting!
Kids are curious and smart, they want to know everything! LOL

Tell him it's God in his great chariot and six big beautiful horses rumbling over the great bridges that span the clouds in heaven, and that there is nothing to fear because God loves his children so.

Back in the 1960's, my Dad told me it was God bowling up in Heaven. It worked for me. It's what I tell my kids, and they're not afraid.

My mom used to tell me it was the clouds fighting and it wasn't a big deal, so I was never scared.
