There is no easy way. This is an issue for management or human resources. Confide in them that this person is difficult to work with because of body odor and they should handle it from there.

Are you the only one who is aware of this, or is it the brunt of office gossip?
An anonymous note is a good idea, if the person isn't the type to get paranoid. If the gentleman has another worker that you think he might be closer to, then see if that person will talk to him.
There could be medical issues, or other things going on that you aren't aware of. Or, religious or cultural issues.
You sound like you want a solution that will be the easiest on his feelings--have you tried (late in the day on Friday) making a light comment, "Joe, did you work out at lunch? you're a bit pungent, my friend." In a mild tone, as if it is unusual. It might be worth trying the subtle approach first.
Good luck--hopefully you will find a gracious solution before someone is too blunt.

Send them an anonymous note to the effect:
Dear co-worker (use their name of course):
I know you must be taking some type of Chinese supplements, but what you may not know is that you are emitting an aroma people are starting to talk about. Maybe you should consider some kind of alternative supplements?
If this doesn't work, spend a little money on air freshener.

I believe in Dove Soap.
Leave them a bar or two at their desk or in their mailslot.
If necessary, go to a computer (off-site) and find some info about personal hygiene, print it off, and leave it with the soap.
If after this there is NO improvement, then quietly pull the co-worker's friend aside and ask them to intervene in the situation.
If after this there is still NO marked improvement, then take the matter to your boss; malodorous co-workers can ruin productivity at work.

I don't think there is an easy way. I know that a friend of mine gave a smelly co-worker a little gift basket (anonymously) of bath & body works products. She got the hint and smelled better after that. I don't think a guy would get that though. LOL. If it's a male coworker, he just needs another guy to tell him, "dude, ya smell. get some deo for the b.o.! and they get it then.LOL

It's not your place to approach someone that way. Be blunt if you have to, but it's not good plotting behind one's back.
