Beta refers to a pre-release version of software. Typically it is software that has not gone through any significant QA, and it likely has a lot of bugs.
There are usually no special requirements beyond what the software would normally have

It means test version or not yet released. Some companys want you to register in order to download betas, some will just give it to you. The only requirements are that your computer meets the hardware specs.

Theoretically it has gone through unit testing first. That's where the programmers check to make sure it works. This is also known as an alpha release.
Beta means programming has passed it, and they are looking for people to break it in ordinary use the programmers did not think of.
Eh, the boarder between alpha and beta varies with the idiot running the project. Not that I am bitter mind you (grin)

beta is a type of vcr, that most people dont have 'cause its ancient. If you are talking about yahoo messinger beta, than that just means that its under development right now. Its free, but it still has a lot of bugs on win 98 computers, but on xp it works fine.

'Beta' means that version of software which are under trial. They are NOT the final version. It may have some bugs which they fix after research & trying these softwares on monkeys like us.
