After you've done ballet it is SO much easier to dance other styles. I know that lyrical and jazz both are based in ballet so you should have no problem.

The biggest problem I had with going to jazz is loosening up and not keeping my back straight all the time.

Ballet is the basis of all WESTERN dance styles. When I say western I don't mean like country music but the western hemisphere of the world (ie North America and Europe). And this also only applies to the classic art forms of dance, not the newer styles influenced by popular music such as street dance.

If you are serious about progressing as a dancer, ballet is an essential part of that. However, I would never say that it is too late to try something new. Go for it!

You can start a new dance form at any age, it may be a bit more difficult. But really the true basis of dance is rhythm and Tribal forms of dance, the earlier the dance form the better. You just need to have a new way of looking at dance and not rely on you Ballet training

Ballet is the root of all dancing, and no it's not to late to learn more styles of dancing, I've been taking ballet for 9 years and last year I decided to learn jazz and it was surprisingly easy for me.

If you are talking about all forms of formal dance (not ballroom or hip hop), then yes, it is the basis for the other forms. It is not too late. Baryshnikov did not begin jazz or modern dance until later in his career, and then incorporated it into the repertoire at the Met.

Hey, watch Fox's "So you think you can Dance?" show on television! A good dancer can dance almost any type of dance according to them. It is also never too late to learn anything if you leave your mind open.
