I had to give my cat an IV a few years ago due to the stupidity of another vet. It wasn't the most pleasant thing to have to hold down this cat for twenty minutes a day to allow the fluids to be absorbed into his system. Any animal can be given an IV under the right circumstances. Try reading up on some of the animal vet books like James Herriott to learn more about animal health.

Yes. I had a cat that was extremely dehydrated and the vet had to insert an IV into one of her legs.

They sure can the neat thing about them is you can put them in lots of different places and they can function lots of different ways. For example in rabbits you can place them in their ear veins, in dogs and cats you can place it in their legs, necks even in their bones if they are puppies they are called osteocaths.
The neck IV are called jugular catheters you can use them to draw blood, give fluids and even measure a type of blood pressure.

You should try and volunteer with your local veterinarian, they usually like the help and teaching new people about this exciting field.
