This is a personal choice you will have to make. You may choose to swim (great for the heart) or run. Running was not for me so riding a bike was my choice. The standard exercises like push ups, side bends, knee bends, sit ups, and good old walking are also effective and can even be fun. If you can find a partner do so. This commits you to a workout and getting help from your partner is an additional benefit. Make sure you do the proper research to understand proper techniques and training methods. If you can afford a personal trainer even for a short time try it. You will learn lots about yourself and have some fun.

I like swimming the best because it's low-impact (I have a bad back and knees from a motorcycle accident), it works your muscles and your heart and lungs at the same time. Not just splashing around in the water, but actually going for distance.

I burn 500 calories in 40 minutes on the Elliptical trainer.
On a bike it would take me almost an hour, walking it would take twice... Swimming is great as well... try doing 30 minutes on the machine and then you can splash around in the pool- this helps my muscles relax after a good work-out!

Surfing, because it's not only a great workout but very fun. Not everyone can surf if you haven't an ocean to go to, so swimming is the next best thing.

Running. It keeps you moving. Or try volleyball its great for working out those muscles. Or Tae Bo, I know it sounds weird but its actually good exercising, it makes you work out every muscle.
