I have a similar kitchen, except my cabinets are whitewashed. I did my walls in a very pale aqua color. It is bright & cheerful without being too bright, and the color works really well with the whites and the wood floor & stainless appliances & accents. It is also a good choice in an older home, as it is kind of a retro color, but kept modern by the stainless. We did the backsplash in a 4x4" glass tile in shades of aqua, green & white. Everyone who has seen it really likes it. We don't have any wallpaper at all, we painted the dining area in vertical stripes about a foot wide in the color of the kitchen walls and both a lighter & darker shade of the same color. It is subtle, but dramatic and easier to keep up than wallpaper (and easier to get rid of if we ever get sick of it).

Visit your local hardware or paint store and pick up color cards and brochures. Try several and take into consideration objects in the room, such as lighting, decorations, etc. Some places have a program on a computer where they can punch in floor and cabinet colors and with the color you pick, show you the outcome. It's a fun way to see how it may look. Then there is trial and error and you can purchase small cans of paint at several places to play with.
Go with what feels and looks good to you, remember you will be the one enjoying it :)
**when i look at magazines and see designs or things I like, I cut them out and put them in a folder for future decorating reference.

Pick your favorite color, don't just think in terms of "house" colors. Also, do not wallpaper! It is very hard to keep clean, and when you are tired of it, it is a pain in the BLEEP to get rid of. One of my fav's for a kitchen is red.

Have you thought of banana yellow? It is bright and cheery, but not overwhelming.

I wouldn't do wallpaper! Hard to decorate around, hard to remove, etc. I currently have wallpaper in my kitchen. It was all orange and brown 70's, so I painted over it!

Maybe try picking a theme first and then pick colors that go with the theme.

PERSONALLY I WOULD DO A JEWEL TONE RED, NOT FIRE ENGINE RED. GOOD WITH WHITE AND BLACK. FOR ME ITS MY FAVORITE COLOR. YOU WILL HAVE TO BE THE JUDGE OF WHAT YOU LOVE. YOUR KITCHEN SOUNDS BEAUTIFUL... HAVE FUN!
