It all depends, if your buying it from some one whos just wants to sell there car then i would say run. Mostlikely they ran the crap out of it, if its from a dealer request a car report or go to " www.carfax.com" when you do that also look at the small things in the car not just the way it looks and runs. If you buy it from a dealer, most likely they fix it up preaty good so that it makes you say wow, but after you leave the shop take it to a well none mech to check it out, it shouldnt cost you more then 50 dollars to get it check out, just tell them you want them to inspect it not work on it.

Buying any used car is a crap shoot. I will also take it that your talking about a private sale and not from a car dealer.
1. If your state reguires a inspection sticker every year see when it was last inspected the more recently it was the more likey the shocks struts brakes and stuff they check will be good.
2. start the car cold and see if somke comes out of the tail pipes if so the rings are bad and engine is not going to last long. the reason to do it when the engine is cold the rings will not have heat in them and metal when it gets heat will expand and make the bad rings tighter so dont smoke.
3. test drive it make sure the brakes are working good no hesatation in the motor no play in the sterring wheel. Any thing dont feel or sound right forget about the car.
4 Have someone that knows about cars look at it be a friend family co worker the mechanic you go to all the time for so you dont have that car lust with your dream car clouding your judgment.

Well the first part of your question is very subjective. The only way a vehicle of anysort lasts is by taking care of it. Most perfomance based platforms last well intot he 100,000+ mileage range with the proper care. As for finding a good one, well I have in my experience relied on the dealerships. A car that 5-6 years old and of an unknown background is a crap shoot. Dealers usually have the handle on this sort of thing. I am not a dealer by the way, but just experience. Most reputatble dealers offer the Carfax report with the auto and that is supposed to verify the hisory of the car. Take that with a grain of salt though. If offered take the extended warranty. It will be worth it in the long run. Tranmission repair or relplacement, for example, would be more than the average bear could afford in 1 bite. I hope that you find the right car for you. Good luck

I bought mine brand new and has over 115 thousand miles on it now. still in great shape. it depends on how well the privious owner took care of it. run the vin on carfax and make suire it wasnt in an accident or something.
