My cat has fleas and I want to treat him quickly but i have to wait to get the meds., can I at least wash off the flea dirt? I know I can wash him but I only have dog shampoo... Hartz® LIVING™ Groomer's Best® All-Purpose Shampoo to be exact. I have interned with a vet before and saw cats go into shaking fits from dog flea meds, but this is just shampoo. Will it hurt him? Can I use it? Please help me!!! I don't want to hurt him, but cannot deal with flea dirt all over my bed and his appointment isn't for a week and a half.

By the way my cat is 2 and has never had fleas before, I think he got them from either sitting in the window screen or, the new harness I got him from petco.

You can get cat shampoo at pet stores or a lot of discount stores (WalMart, etc.). It won't do the whole job, but it. will help. Bathing him every day will kill lots of the critters. Frontline Plus for cats is the best treatment I've seen. You can get it from a vet or online from several sources (Google to find them). Don't use flea collars. They just smell bad and don't do much good. Also, you and your cat may want to vacate your apartment for a few days and set off a flea bomb so you can't get reinfested.

A word of warning: if your cat keeps scratching for weeks after all that, he may have an allergic dermititis--a reaction to the flea bites. That happened to my dog, and he had to go on prednisone.

what you should do is just go to the store and buy some flea repelent for cats or put vinagar on the cats fur for a whole day and don't let him lick it and it will kill the fleas. Just don't wash it off with conditionar!!! Only shampoo, or you can just rinse!! But not conditionar because then it can bring the fleas back to life and have more babys because it fertilizes them.

Hey! Expecting a cat not to groom themselves is like expecting a human to go without a drink of water in 100* degree weather! Forget the vinegar crap! Theres stuff for dogs, and then theres stuff for cats, its all diff.

You usually don't need an appointment to get flea repellents for your animals, THEY KNOW THIS IS PEAK FLEA SEASON, just call the vet and tell them you need some Advantage (strictly flea repellent) or some Frontline, (Flea & tick repellant) , go pick it up, they will tell you where to put it, ABOVE THE SHOULDER BLADES, ITS LEAST LIKELY TO BE LICKED OFF, AND PLUS, THE PORES ARE BIGGER THERE, AND IS OBSORBED FASTER.

Just dont get any of that stuff over the counter, like from HARTZ, because its harmful to animals........

P.S. I have 4 indoor cats, and they get fleas this time of year, the fleas get on them either through screens, or they ride in on humans!!!

First of all the cats hates to have a bath. The second is the fleas never infects to mankind. They are mainly comes to saliva of the cats.

I think at treatment phase you have to use a powder med for flea. I believe your vet recommends a proper med for this purpose. You may apply it to all body of your cat.

Then you have to apply a preventive treatment every month for fleas. I have two cats and I am using FRONTLINE from MERIAL. It is a spot on med. You just drop one dose (0,5 ml) FRONTLINE on the neck of your cat every month. You need nothing more.

I hope your cat will has happy days without flea.

dog shampoo is for dogs!!! If your cat is a kitten go to the vet they will have shampoo for fleas that is safe for kittens. You probably won't need an appointment. Frontline plus can be used on kittens as young as 8 weeks. Don't wait as it can cause your cat to be anemic and suffer organ damage

Avon Skin-so-soft works wonders on fleas. Mix 1 part skin-so-soft with 3 parts water and bathe the cat. The skin-so-soft has an oil base that suffocates the fleas and is safe for the cat.

I reccomend Frontline for cats - when you get the money.
In the meantime - RAID is a good flea spray. Do NOT spray it ON the cat. Spray the AREA and keep the cat away from the area for at least an hr. (READ THE LABEL)

You can get the Front Line at the vets office without an appt.

Just go to the pet shop first thing tomorrow morning and buy stronghold or frontline. These are sprays or small capsules you put on his neck. They really work! Don't wash the poor thing, it won't work either. And the vet will only do what I already told you.
