I crushed the mint with four teaspoons of sugar, added a pint of soda water and four measures of white rum and served over ice. It just tastes a lot more boring than I remember when I had it in Miami. Should I have made it with a darker rum? Did I miss an ingredient out? Did I get the quantities wrong? Or do Mojitos just taste better by a pool in Miami than in my kitchen in England?

1. You don´t use just sugar, but dark cane sugar. Demerara will do.
2. You don´t use just any white rum, but Cuban rum like Havana Club.
3. You forgot the lime juice.
4. I hope you used fresh mint leaves, not dried.

Take all of this into account and your Mojito will taste like it is supposed to do, like Earnest Hemingway loved it.

The first time I had one it was because James Bond drank one, but the bartender in the resort did not have the proper ingredients so it came out pretty bad. Since then I have learned how to make them myself. Try using quality rum like Bacardi or a variety like Limon, fresh mint and lime, and make a syrup instead of using plain sugar. This will make it blend with the alcohol more.

I don't think you need a pint of soda water, I only ever use a long dash to 'charge' the mojito once everything is mixed in the glass and ready to go.
Rum choice is important, I like to use one shot of white rum (never basic Bacardi) prefrably Mateusalem Platino and one shot of darker rum - Appletons VX.
Lime juice, I usually go half as much lime juice as booze.
Good luck.

In taste tests with the beer produced by Malaga airport - San Miguel, my wife prefers the taste when in Spain. It tastes the same if you bring a bottle or can back to the UK as one bought here.

So, therefore, it must be the atmosphere that changes it, I personally believe it is the fact that it tends to be more humid in the UK that at latitudes nearer the equator.

Next time you are in Miami, splash half a teaspoon of water into the drink and see if it tastes like those made in the UK.

I think I would have added Lime and Simple syrup, Simple syrup, just mixes better than just using Sugar. Here is a recipe from Bacardi try this one and see if it tastes any better.
