I'm not a big Gift Certificate or cold hard cash person for gifts - I think it's too impersonal "Here's some dough. Go buy your own gift"
Instead, I would do a nice engraved bottle of bubbly. This way the gift will certainly be useful. Schramsberg, one of the best bubbly producers in the US will do custom engraving of their bottles - they are really really beautiful.

I know a couple that got married when they were 44 and 47 a couple gifts they got that I thought were really nice and different were.... A gift certificate from the photographer that took there wedding pictures and they put the certificate in a picture frame so they would have the frame for a picture. A wicker basket full of there favorite snacks so they wouldnt have to get out of bed on there honeymoon. It was cute, they even but some powerade, ensure, and vitamins in it. Since neither of them had to worry about birth control they put a real bag of balloons in it with an airpump. Just be creative.

A gift certificate to a nice Bed and Breakfast would be an ideal gift for the couple. If you are able to, make it so they can use it on their first Wedding Anniversary.
Have fun at the Wedding!

Cash, inside a very nice wedding card, plus a "First Christmas Together" ornament.
If you're good at arts and crafts, make the ornament yourself. Otherwise, the Gold Crown Hallmark stores will have their 2006 Christmas ornaments on display quite soon.

Ask them if they have a wedding registry. That would be my first pick. Then if not, go with a nice gift certificate or towels.

I would get a gift certificate to a restaurant, a store or for a massage. Or just give money.

If you are close to them, ask them if they have a favorite cause or charity and let them know that you'd like to make a donation in their honor as your wedding gift to them..

A framed picture or peice of art always works. Have an artist custom make a painting or photo or collage for them... it will mean something to them, takes up little space, and yo ucan match it with decor they have already.

Maid service for a month! Seriously, who wants to spend the beginning of their marriage cleaning?!? It's really not as costly as some might think!
