weak and turning to religion as a crutch?
(Notice I haven't given my opinion for you idiots who seem to read something into every question. I'm simply asking because my brother-in-law makes this claim.)

When I think about religious people, I think of them as being very superstitious...like where I'm from, you're religious when you only wear all white to church to signify how holy you are...or when you tell someone to turn off a song just because you think it's hip-hop or "blues", these type of people I define as being religious, but to aswer your question, I don't think religious people use religion as a crutch, I simply think that they are very uninformed and because of this, they are ignorant.

Your brother-in-law must be one of those people who thinks it's cool not to be religious. Personally, I think such people are egoistic, not wanting to acknowledge that they can't solve all their problems.

Anyway, some religious people turn to religion because they sometimes feel helpless and would love for a higher power to solve all their problems. Other religious people turn to religion to try and discover the answers about life and the universe.

So, yes, some religious people are weak and turn to religion for help. There's nothing wrong with that. It is much like how a patient suffering from depression meets a counselor for advice.

I'm sure that's the point of some religions, but there are so many different kinds that there is no ys or no answer. I really don't think that ateism is any less of a crutch though; how is it stronger for somebody to believe that it doesn't matter what they do, and that once they're dead there's no risk of further suffering? I think it's stronger for somebody to embrace a higher truth and live their life according to it. Even if they're mistaken, they're exhibiting self discipline and self control.

I think a lot of people use it this way. They blame their God for things not going their way and refuse to take responsibilty for the way their live turn out. Also, if you notice, terrible things have been done in the name of religion (Crusades, Witch Trials, Jihad). If everyone would simply live a good life and treat others with respect, there would be no need to depend on a diety to fix things for them.

Some people will turn to it because they are scare and weak, but not every one.

Some people has the need to feel safe, and will go tu church just to earn a peace of heaven.

And some just go because it has been a hereditary believe.

Some just had a near death experience and will go just because they have the need to feel closer to God.

And some well they just are confused in life. But like every one has a different calling to go to church.

I think so. They need so much to find meaning in their life that they cling to anything that has rules and structure.
