Suicide is not illegal (as the posters above noted, how can they prosecute someone who's already dead? Punishing a corpse is kind of pointless.) ATTEMPTED suicide brings fines with it, depending on how you go about your attempt, because it ties up police and ambulance resources that might otherwise be used to save the lives of people who want to live. It's not so much a punishment, but a fee for the services that you're using -- even calling an ambulance to get you to the hospital normally levies some sort of charge. The fees differ depending on your location.

The funny thing about this is that, many years ago, it was illegal to commit suicide in the UK. Those who tried, and failed, were then bundled off to prison where the unfortunate person was then hanged !!
I suppose, at the end of the day, the poor unfortunate person got what they wanted.
This ridiculous piece of legislation was repealed some time ago and no longer applies.

Assisted suicide is illegal. If you commit suicide, you're dead, so no one can collect a fine from you or put you in jail. You just have to be successful. If you are not successful, you'll probably just get mental health counseling (in-patient treatment) until you're able to deal with life. Suicide is selfish, weak and cowardly. Dealing with life takes guts!

There isn't a fine because if you are living then you haven't successfully committed suicide.
If you are successful then you're dead so you can't be fined.
You are also psychiatrically ill when you commit suicide and it would not be right to fine someone for being mentally ill.

It's illegal? I didn't know that. I just kind of assumed that if you committed suicide... well, you were basically free of things of this world. Even fines... but dam/n, what a day that must be for someone! You kill yourself and then you pay a fine... dam/n.

Suicide is not illegal (Who would you prosecute?) but in many states ATTEMPTED suicide is. The reason is that many people who try this are troubled and it gives police and course to force someone to get help.

Suicide is not illegal although it is a grave matter.. However, it is FINE if carried out successfully. Unfortunately, you will not be aware of it, but those left behind will have to carry the can. (Sorry, should I have said CASKET?).

I heard the max sentence is 120 hours of community service, failure to comply would result in contempt of court and a bench warrant being issued for your arrest.
