CAUSES

Hormones

Male pattern baldness depends on the presence of male homrones. The most well known male hormone is testosterone. Testosterone can be converted into a more active hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by an enzyme found in skin cells and hair follicles called 5-alpha reductase (5 R).

Men with male pattern hair loss have high levels of DHT in their skin. This hormone shortens the growth phase of the normal hair cycle. The follicles also produce weaker, shorter hair and may stop making scalp hair altogether.

Genes

Hair loss at a young age is passed through families. Baldness can be inherited from either your mother's or your father's side of the family. It is not necessarily the mother's or the father genes. As you probably have seen first hand, the mother's side of the family may have no male baldness and the father's a lot of male baldness...the son can still have baldness - and vice versa.

Age

Age is another important factor. As men grow older, the likelihood of suffereing male pattern hair loss increases.

I cant answer that from a scientific standpoint. Bald women though? That's a scary sight, especially on the senior citizens without all their teeth. Middle aged woman have been known for balding as well I just dont think its as obvious becuase women are more conscience of their haircare.

Kinda points out where the hair loss comes from now , doesn't it... Ironically, the gene that causes hair loss in men is inherited from our mothers. Yes, there are other reasons, too much testosterone, stress, girls treating our hair like a scoreboard and plucking them out too. There are some women who suffer severe hair loss as well, but they are far and few compared to the number of men.

It is because women do not have the gene that causes male pattern baldness! Some women get it though..but it isn't that common!
