I study Renaissance Art History but I adore John William Waterhouse's Neoclassical allegorical paintings. His work is sometimes, mistakenly included in the Pre Raphelite genre, but his art does not belong there.

I love the way that he has treated the natural surroundings in his paintings. Neoclassical works almost always have a dull or darkened background which tends to show off the 'stage lit' main character/s. Waterhouse though paints the most superb natural backdrops for his characters. Take The Lady of Shallot for instance, the background could be any rural river meander with highly realistic flora.

If you like his work I recommend that you see some in person. I viewed several of his works at the Tate, including the one mentioned above, and they were almost photographic in detail.
