Well you answered your own question work at a day care. When I was in high school I too took child care classes...straight from high school I went to Tutor Time where I started off as an aide (pretty much just a diaper changer!) Then I transferred to a new Tutor Time where I was given my own Toddler class....a year or so later I was promoted to my own Pre school class....I took several certification courses and was then promoted to Assistant Director and eventually Director of the whole entire center (22 years old making 40 grand a year, not bad for someone who just enjoys working with kids!)
Good Luck!

It depends on what you ultimately enjoy. There are so many tracks when it comes to working with children that you should consider exactly what you want from a career.

If you just enjoy children but don't want to really get technical then there there are a number of options open to you. If you enjoy mainly working you pre-school kids then you should consider working in a nursery or day care centre or even start a professional child minding business. If you like older children, you could become a teaching assistant or work in an after-school club.

However, if you want to do a bit more, you could consider going into teaching (at whatever stage of development interests you) or paediatric nursing. Or you could work with children with specific needs such as the physical or learning disabled or children with emotional problems.

My starting point would be to find out where you could speak to a careers' advisor to go over all your options and narrow down exactly what your skills and interests are so you can go from there.

Inquire at your local community college. Early childhood degree sounds like it would suit you. If you want to be a preschool teacher you will need a ECE degree. If you want to be a daycare/preschool assistant you just need talent and yearly training hours. Remember you won't get rich working with kids.

You could do things like: child care provider, child care director, elementary school teacher, teacher aide, child life specialist (in hospitals), children's party planner, child care licensing agent (they make sure child cares follow the rules), accreditation specialist (they help child cares get special certifications), community organization (YMCA, etc), children's librarian.... and there's probably more that I haven't thought of. Go for it!
