sox fan's information is not correct. The half life (how long until the display is half as bright as the first time it is turned on) is 60,000 hours. Based on the average of 6 hours a day that is a very very long time. LCD does have a longer half life, but BOTH technologies are vastly superior to tube televisions in that regard.
Pros of LCD
No chance for Burn in
Brighter picture
More 1080p Product
Pros of Plasma
Better color gamut
Better black levels
Better motion handling
They are both good technologies, but which one you choose really depends on things like your room, if you plan on playing video games etc...
Also I think the first poster is referring to LCD Rear Projection, and I assume you are referring to flat panel LCD technology which does not require a yearly lamp replacement

ok red hot box why dont you check out sharps 65", or new 57" lcd tvs that they offer. The 65 has been in my showroom since late december. And to the other answer plasma has not been proven to only last 6or 7 years. In my opinion the new lcds are however great tvs. good black levels now, mo glare, and for most of the people on here lets be honest its just price. you can get a 40 lcd for about what you would pay for a nice 42" plasma. If ayou do go over 46 inches the plasma is by far a better value though. And before anybody mentions burn in..... i have a 50 inch panasonic onyx ive had for 2 years now, and lets just say its not out of the ordinary for me to play some xbox 360 for 8 plus hours, and guess what.... no burn in. Just dont be stupid and leave it paused for 5 hours

Yes, currently LCD will not wear out and are good for up to 16 years of average use. Plasma TVs even though they say they will last as long, have only been proved to last up to 6 to 7 years. However plasma TVs are the only ones that are 50" or more currently. So it is up to you.

I have a 52" lcd by panasonic...LOVE IT! The maintenance is a bit pricey though...about $300 for a bulb. Other than that, I would recommend them to anyone that can afford one.
