I think the old Testament also prescribes some barbaric punishments, but no Christian or Jew now suports them and none of their countries imposes them. They are in fact an embarassment, only kept in the books for historical reasons. They are a reminder of the savage times the human race has travelled through.

The criticism of civilised people of the Islamic books is because virtually all Muslims blinly and automatically support everything them and argue that they are correct.

The excuses they often make that they require stringent proof or that they are rarely applied are completely without merit because they still imply support.

The only excuse that might make the Islamic religion begin to be respectable would be to say " Yes such punishments are barbaric, no longer acceptable and we are working for their abolition". What do you think?

I've no idea whether these things are enshrined in Sharia law or the Koran, but I'm certain some things like violence towards women are more of a tradition in Asia and Africa, and not necessarily caused by Islam, Islam just seems to condone them. Take bride burnings in India, and female genital mutilation in Africa. These things are not really Muslim, as they are practised by people of other religions as well, and were probably carried out long before Islam appeared. However, if Muslims want to be respected by other races, they need to show equal respect for human rights.

Muslims feel that those punishments are correct and they will bring down the crime rate. Well, Islamic countries do have a very high crime rate in spite of all these laws. Death penalty isn't stopping murder cases either. Muslims would also say that the rate of women getting raped is low in their countries but that is not true. Many, many rapes do not get reported at all because the girl need 3/4 witnesses. Without them she herself would be stoned to death for adultery while the man would go scott free. These laws need to be changed no matter what muslims feel. Oh, and medical testing isn't legal either, only human witnesses are.

*edit*
AK above has a different interpretation but most of the muslims won't agree with him. Prominent muslim scholars like Dr. Zakir Naik from India say that "cutting of hands and feet" should be taken literally. It would reduce crime".

*edit*
There are many open minded muslims over the internet and in countries like Malaysia but remember that this is not the case with most muslim countries. Many women and men, some of them teenagers get regularly stoned to death in Iran.

The sharia law of stonning to death for adultery is taken from Old Testment. Qur'an does not prescribed any such punishment for adultery. The cutting of hands are now interpreted as cutting the means of thiefs which means to put them behind bars.

The stonning to death as a punishment for adultery is included in hadiths which no one can prove to be correct according to Qur'an.

I have posted the adultery punishment according to Qur'an on my blog after getting a mesage from a sister and also provided the source of that punishment.

Extermist Christians would like people to literally follow the Bible as law. I believe it is being pushed in the United States. Certainly there are states that have schools that are being taught creation instead of balancing it with evolution. Not every Muslim country is governed by Sharia law.

I do not believe that the Qumran instructs in those practises and even the bible where it says stone adulterers says man and woman not just the woman. but Jesus made it clear when he said to the Pharisees let him with out sin cast the first stone ( at the woman caught in adultery ) that none of us are sinless and so have no right to judge others
