On June 21, 1756, the headquarters of the East India Company was attacked by the anti-British forces of Suraj-ud-Daula, the nawab of Bengal. 146 prisoners were squeezed into the tiny one-room military jail at Fort William, for one evening. The room measured 18 ft. by 18 ft. The room temperature became very high, and only a small amount of water was given to a few prisoners. Prisoners died when they became too weak to stand, and were crushed by other prisoners. In the morning 23 prisoners were still alive. The jail became known as the Black Hole Of Calcutta

the black olav calcutta (it's original spelling) is one of the most rare and precious stones on Earth. It was discovered in the ruby mining areas of Eastern India in the mid 1700s and is thought to be a ruby transmogrified by a minor meoteoric event.
It was later to be known as the black hole of calcutta after it went missing from it's secure resting place within the Taj Mahal. It was never discovered again, nor was there any evidence relating to its removal. Some people in the local region still relate the stories of their forefathers of UFOs being sighted on that same night.
The prsion story (mentioned earlier) is indeed true but took its name from the similarities of this event. The prisoners were crammed and did die but there was never any evidence found of any wrongdoing! Moreover the authorities cited unusually high temperatures caused by visiting UFOs!!!

In fact, there is only one contemporary account of the story, allegedly by a survivor of the incident. There is no other evidence of it.
This story was used by the British government of the day to justify the evolution of the small scale theft of Indian land and products by the East India Company into a full scale occupation of the country by the British military forces
It is likely that it never happened, or at least that it was greatly exaggerated as a pretext for occupation (which lasted 200 years).
Anyone see parallels with Iraq ?
