They are never clipped or cropped. They should begin standing as he matures..

You may speed things along by massaging them, but if he is purebred, they will stand on their own.

Here is an excellent site if you are worried about his ears, it stats that some do need taped, and gives the time frame.>> http://www.leerburg.com/tapingears.htm

do you mean trimming the hair inside the ears? I hope so,because if talking about getting the ears cropped, like a doberman,German Shepard's never ever get the ears cropped they stand on their own naturally,at around 5-6 months usually, they will stand on their own.Trimming the hair inside the ears can be done at any age, when the dog gets groomed you can have the hairs trimmed.

I know a German Shepard Dog breeder who said you should not play with the puppy's ears, bend them and such or you could damage them to the point that later they won't stand up. Maybe this is just hearsay but that is what I was told.

Never. That's the first time I've ever heard of that suggestion for German Shepards.

Why would you do that? I'm fully against artifically modifying my dogs (yes, my wife shows dogs, and our dogs get shown 100% all natural and one is STILL in the top 10 in the country!).

Don't clip the ears. There's nothing cuter than when a GS puppy notices something and both ears pop up, touching each other (a.k.a "party hat").

Would you want your ears to be clipped?

they aren't clipped. When they are young the ears flop down, but if you leave them alone, they stand up as the pup grows.
Doberman's ear's are clipped, not german shepard's.

Ears are not clipped. The term is "cropped", and German Shepherds do not need it. Their ears stand up on their own as they grow.

German shepards need their ears taped, their is a specific way to do this, if their ears do not stay up.
