It's likely that you can't just go to the County Records and get a copy of your original birth certificate without going to court to have the seal on the records removed. It isn't terribly hard to do (especially since your adoption was only by your father). But you should consult an attorney.

It's common practice that all records of proceedings regarding minors are sealed to prevent strangers from snooping. This is especially true in child custody cases. Your adoption will have a case number associated with it and that information should be attached to your birth certificate information. You'll have to go the LA County Clerk's office to have them pull it up, then ask if they will confirm whether the records from that adoption are officially sealed or not (it's much better to do in person because you will have shown your ID to prove it is you, so they're usually more open about giving out information). If it's NOT sealed, then you just request copies of the proceedings. Your original birth certificate will be attached.

The other way to get the information is to request copies of your medical records from the hospital where you were born, though you will need the last name that's on your hospital admission records to get it. If you can't get that name, you could try writing to them and asking it something like this:

Dear Sirs,
Please send copies of my hospital records of my birth to Dr _(fill in your family doctor's name...they usually won't release to you alone)___, ___(address)___. I was the infant daughter born to __(mom's maiden name)____ on ____(date)___. These records are needed as part of my treatment.

Signed____(your current name)_____

My mother was adopted and so was I. By the way she was born in 59 also in LA. So was I in 78. Anyways, she has gotten sick here in the past few years and they are contributing her sickness to heredity. As you know once you are adopted your old name and identity are sealed in a very confidential file and it takes good reason and legal litigation to open the sealed files. My mother had to get an attorney. It took time. If you can get your fathers name it will speed the process up. Contacting the hospital you were born in may give you some insight on where to go from here.

You should be able to go to the court house in the county you were born and get a copy of your birth certificate and see the name of the man who was your father then.

do you have any other relatives you could talk to ... or even your adopted father .. they do have to have the biological father sign off on the adoption . he just might have some answers for you or just give your mom a little time to come around maybe she never thought she would have to tell you and just needs to collect herself first.. if you approach her positively and not with negativity or accusations she might come around it was probably hard for her to keep it from you but she must have felt she was making the right choice for your sake.. mothers do the strangest things out of love for their children..good luck

I think you are old enough to know this information. Tell your mother you will find out one way or another and she can save you the time and money by just telling you the truth.
