You will never be able to get into that business now. Too many players in that business and retailers are trying to do it in house now.
You need a bank charter I believe.

Contact your bank, which can usually recommend "Merchant Services", that will include companies that set up businesses for this. Also, easily ask other businesses for their info, which is right there on the machine you slide your cards through, to set up some appointments. It's very easy to do!

Are you wanting to be a merchant or are you trying to accept credit cards for your business. If you are wanting to be a merchant then you need to contact either your bank and ask them how to become a merchant or you can try getting a hold of each credit card company you want to accept. Visa's merchant website is http://www.usa.visa.com/business/accepting_visa/ops_risk_management/cisp.html?it=wb|/|Learn%20More

American Express
http://home.americanexpress.com/homepage/merchant_ne.shtml
MasterCard
http://www.mastercard.com/us/merchant/index.html

Discover

So try those sites out and you can become a merchant but if you are wanting to just accept credit cards for your business then go to your bank.
