If you're completely locked out of your computer, you'll need software. Such services include Login Recovery, FastCrack, and NT Password and Registry Editor. Each is free. They make use of boot disks that you can download to a floppy or burn to CD. Of course, you'll have to use some other computer to do the downloading.
Once you've got access to your computer, set a new password through Windows.
To do this: click Start, Control Panel.
Double-click User Accounts.
Select your account and click ‘Change my password.’ You'll be prompted for a new password.
You'll also have the opportunity to enter a password reminder. It should trigger your memory if you ever forget your password. But the reminder should not be descriptive enough to allow others to determine your password.

You are screwed - passwords are there to KEEP PEOPLE OUT that DON"T KNOW the password.
If you are part of a company with an Active Directory, you can have your password reset.
If this is your home PC, or otherwise no central 'clearing house', then you must reload. You might try using Recovery console & copy directories of documents, IF you can get that far [IT requires a password too!!!].
Next time, create a Password Reset Disk that will let you back in, and save this floppy in a SAFE place.
OR pay the money for the program mentioned above at http://www.winternals.com/Products/AdministratorsPak/Default.aspx
or a similar site.
Another idea is to get another disc, install XP, and add your existing disc to that as a second drive. You should get access by being the administrator and taking control of the second disc.
And don't do ANYTHING suggested ABOVE involving removing CPU pins, nor saving passwords in a hidden file (the file is ON the disc you CAN"T get access to)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The system administrator will have to get your password for you.
Windows XP is designed to keep people out who don't know the password. That's what it's there for.
When the sysadmin gives you a new password, remember it.
Of course, if YOU are the system administrator... sigh ... you can reinstall Windows.

If the locksmith programs listed by the person before me doesn't work, you can also try to do an inplace upgrade of xp which will reset the registry. You will need to download SP2 again. Be warned that there is a file you have to be careful of so that you don't wipe away all of your information. Do a Yahoo search for "inplace upgrade of windows xp" and READ READ READ how to do this first!!

Trying logging in as an Administrator in Safemode, if this does not work, check out something called ERD commander from Wininternals, it is a bootable cd which will allow you to reset your Windows xp passsword thru its locksmith program.

With the power off and disconnected, open up your CPU case and find a small, round battery, the size of a quarter. Unplug that battery for about 15 minutes and put it back in. Power up and the password should be removed.

Microsoft has included two default settings in Windows XP that protect the user by specifically preventing scenarios like this from happening.
1) Administrator account is not password-protected.
2) Administrator account is only accessible in Safe Mode.
Boot in "Safe Mode"
> Log on by clicking on "Administrator"
> Go to "Start Menu"
> Go to "Control Panel"
> Go to "Users and Passwords"
> Select user account to delete bad password
> Create password for user account & click "Save"
> Go to "Start Menu"
> Select "Shutdown" then "Restart"
Boot in "Safe Mode with Command Prompt "
> Login by typing "Administrator" (Case sensitive)
> Be sure to leave Password field blank
> Follow the same steps listed for "Safe Mode''
Example of logon for "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"
Login: Administrator
Password: (leave blank)
