The key issue is getting the nits (eggs) out of the hair and making sure that any lice kicking around don't come back into the hair.

First, you need to get a good nit comb. The ones that come with the shampoo are not good enough. However, on the same shelf in the drugstore you should find metal nit combs.

It's important to know that live nymphs and eggs are a) brown (a problem on brown hair) and b) next to the scalp. So, put the kid (or whoever) in front of the TV or with a good book, wet the hair thoroughly, and then take very small sections of hair and comb it, making sure you scrape the scalp with the comb. In between sections, rinse the comb in HOT water (I just put some in a basin or the sink). Pin up each section of hair as you go so you can really see what you're doing.

You have to do this every day, maybe twice a day, until you do it and get nothing out. Then you should do it every other day or so for a while.

Step two is smothering the ones you miss, and you will miss some. The shampoos kill them, but lice are getting resistant to the shampoos and they can be neurotoxic. I recommend olive oil. Soak the hair in olive oil, massage it into the scalp, slap a shower cap on and leave it overnight. Again, do this daily until you aren't combing anything out. (Warning, you will need to shampoo at least twice to get the oil out)

All of this will be for nought, however, if you don't make sure to treat the home environment, too. All stuffed animals, pillows, etc. should be put in a garbage bag and tied shut for two weeks. By this time, any stray eggs will have hatched and the lice, having nowhere to go, will have died.

Sheets, towels, clothes, etc., should be washed on HOT and put through a HOT dryer.

Combs, barrettes, etc. should be soaked in rubbing alcohol (same with the nit comb in between treatments).

This is a big nuisance, but remember, lice aren't dangerous, they're just a pain! Good luck.

NEVER use those chemical treatments unless you w ant to fry your brain and give your immune system a treat. I was told to wash the hair thoroughly then coat with conditioner - three times more than you would usually use. then comb through with lice comb they cant stick to hair in conditioner. wash and condition hair every day for a fortnight - the lice can only come back if eggs are left in the hair to hatch and start the cycle again. two weeks should remove all eggs therefore all risk of infection. I was told to do this by a doctor who had children and was horrified that people would actually put those chemicals on their childrens heads. It worked for me.

Lice: Any shampoo as advertised for getting rid of them
Crabs: Quellada used to be the favourite but tell your pharmacist what you've got - they don't get a lot of laughs in that job.

I've found that smothering the head in conditioner for a couple of hours helps to remove the eggs & adults, also use the medicted shampoos. Try to vary which treatment you use, as the little buggers can get immunity if you use the same product all the time.
You also need to get a nit comb & go thro' the hair section by section & pick out the eggs & adults the comb misses!!

Good luck & happy hunting!!!!

Go to the drugstore and see what kind of products are available. There's shampoo, a nit comb and other stuff. You'll need to wash everything washable and vacuum everything, like the couch, chairs, rugs, floor, everything, and put the pillows and heavy comforters in the dryer for 40 or 50 minutes. Give your HOUSE a thorough cleaning and wipe and dust everything down. Oh, empty the vacuum or change the vacuum bag right away otherwise they'll come back out.

Go to the pharmacy and get the comb and treatment made by RID. Find out the source of lice to prevent re-infestation.

I heard they make a good soup. Tell me if you want the recipe. J/K.

There are some strong remedies on the market (that also cause problems while they get rid of lice).

A very safe alternative is olive oil. I don't know the specifics of how it is to be used-- you can do a search on google.

There are several different shampoos, but Rid works the best, and it will come with a little comb. Make sure you read the directions, so that you get rid of all of them. Also wash all your bedding. And any thing that your head may have rested on.
