Services are depleting--they are not lost, but they certainly are not expanding in a way that will improve communities of people.

America is losing services because there are too many jerk offs out there that abuse them. Things like welfare, food stamps and social security were not made and are not intended to be used as primary means of income. But that's what people do. They figure "Hey, if I have 2 more kids, then I can get $500 more a month" They don't think "Hey, maybe I should get off my lazy butt and get a job" The think they're owed something by the government just because they live here. Screw that. Pay your dues, get a job and let the people who really NEED the system and are willing to use it PROPERLY do so. It's not the military's fault. Their budgets have been cut too.

The "services" you refer to are legitimately handled by the state governments, not the federal. Therefore, there are no services that are being lost. In our national format, the federal government is designed only to handle foreign affairs. If you have complaints about the level of services, talk to your Governor. If you think the states can't afford to provide those services because the Feds are taking too much in taxes, then elect more conservative Republicans to the Federal level, and get the taxes cut. Then perhaps you can get what you want at the state level. Unless you hypocritically don't want to follow the design of the Constitution. If that's the case, then go ahead and get all your "services" at the Federal level. I'm just amused, cuz you seem to value the Constitution when it agrees with you, and ignore it when it doesn't.

Ah, the classic "guns-and-butter" question. Yes, there is some loss of services I imagine -- if military spending wasn't where it is now, the Repulicans would probably push through another tax cut, which is in some sense a service.

I'm seeing a lot of misinformation in the other answers:

"the time we have been there is at 400 billion now and they expect by 2009 it will hit a trillion dollars. every person in the u.s. could be a millionaire with the amount they are spending."
If I accept your trillion-dollar conjecture, for this to be true in 2009, 99.7% of the US population would have to die (otherwise, it's a lot less than a million dollars each).

"1400 [missiles] were fired the military and u.s. stated. that amounts to 1.4 trillion used just for that."
Again, assuming your figures are correct, this would require the cost of the missiles to be $1 billion each. (For perspective, there 38 entries in the CIA World Factbook wih GDPs less than $1 billion.)

of course they are. we are spending over 100 billion a year being in iraq just on the military alone. the time we have been there is at 400 billion now and they expect by 2009 it will hit a trillion dollars. every person in the u.s. could be a millionaire with the amount they are spending. every rocket and missle fired cost well over a million each. they claim we only spent 400 billion but its in the trillions. the missles shot in the so called shock and awe cost a few million each. 1400 were fired the military and u.s. stated. that amounts to 1.4 trillion used just for that.

The military should be taken care of first. They are the ones that keep us living freely like we like to live. I haven't hear ed of any services being cut. The military doesn't get what all they need either so they must be getting cut to. When my nephew was in Ir ac he was asking us to send him socks and shoes and basic things, so I don't think their the ones getting anything.

No....We have a bloated budget for both. The question is, do you want to depend on the government? Its not very efficient and power corrupts (both sides of the aisle). Why should we have to depend on the government to take care of us? Oh...by the way the military has to contend with budget cuts too. Go ask someone that serves.

I think so. The other day I waited 15 minutes for a waiter to come to the table because that place is short-handed because of the military. What's this country coming to?
