Most people, including lawmakers from both parties, know the immigration system is broken and that we need real reform. But some right-wingers, including Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) and former House Speaker Rep. Newt Gingrich, keep holding on to the fantasy that we if we just conduct a massive police action to arrest, try and deport every undocumented worker in every factory and every farm in America, we can solve our immigration problem in a snap.

Well, the Center for American Progress today released the first-ever cost assessment of a mass deportation policy for the 10 million undocumented persons currently in the country and the 500,000 that successfully cross the border each year. And guess what? It would essentially drain the Treasury. The data analysis estimates the cost to be at least $206 billion over 5 years ($41.2 billion annually), and could be as high as $230 billion. We arrived at this number even after assuming that 2 million of the 10 million would leave on their own

The rest of the artical

To put $41 billion in perspective, that would exceed the entire annual budget of the Dept of Homeland Security ($34.2 billion) and more the double the annual cost of the war in Afghanistan ($16.8 billion).

Most reasonable politicians have rejected mass deportation as costly and ineffective measure that would do little to improve our security and could devastate key sectors of our economy. This study puts the nail in the coffin for the “just deport ‘em” crowd.

And imagine what that would to to the cost of living.

With no more slave labor, prices would soar on goods and services. Not to mention our taxes, who would pay for the deportation of all those illegals.

I really hope this happens, then I want to see what all the anti illegals would do, they would belly ache about how expensive everything is and how high their taxes would be....

Please show me an article where Tom Tancredo advocates massive policate action to arrest and deport illegal aliens. I'll help you, it doesn't exist, because he never and will never say that. Some dishonest people, including most of the news media and politicans in favor of importing povery and open borders, put up this straw man argument as the only other choice. President Bush said that some people want instant amnesty, others want mass deportation. His middle ground is amnesty over a 10 year period. He's right about the instant amnesty people, but there is nobody that is calling for massive deportations over night.

What I find as striking is that whenever we deny public benefits or arrest anyone here illegally there is always panic in the illegal alien colonies. What do you think would happen if we actually started enforcing the law and denying jobs, schools, housing, and other benefits to people here illegally? What Tom Tancredo is saying is simply enforce the current laws. Part of the agreement with the 1986 amnesty was tougher employer sanctions and tough interior enforcement. If we make it impossible to live here illegally by actually arresting people that use fake documents and deny benefits, we will create a climate where people recognize the party is over, and they'd better leave.

If we couple that with border security we'd actually have control of our immigration system and we'd save untold billions of dollars, and every American would benefit.

In case you haven't noticed the government spends with an open check book. How many billions go to wars ? Still Treasury is open for business and the hurricanes there are more billions of dollars in use still the Treasury open for business. If they really did this they would make cuts from other programs. We can get every American to send $ 20 bucks to the cause and most will and the Treasury will remain open and deporting can proceed We Americans will help out. We want people in our country legally !! Going with what sealRborders said I would also like to add that every raid at every place of employment they must be required and made to pay for the cost to deport whoever works there.

Money well spent!

Does this report say why it would cost so much?Exactly to the penny where that money would get spent on?
I doubt it. When they had their little protest march we should have just kept marching their a** back to where ever they came from.Mostly Mexico.People are making this issue way to complicated in my opinion. They are here illegally.Bottom line is they gotta go back.It has nothing to do with rights, civil liberties or if you are a Republican or Democrat. ILLEGAL is illegal and that should be the focus.ALL of our government let this get out of hand NOT just Bush so the bashers out there need to step back and ask what other president has done anything to keep this from happenening.NOT ONE! SO since it is costing the taxpayers a lot of money to support these people and their kids, their extended families and friends with food, housing, health care I personally am sick to death of it. Go back home and bleed your own country dry!

History shows that with a good train system and solid time tables we can move millions if need be. No, we'll never get ALL of them, but use your brain, we don't NEED to. Besides, it about time we did something concrete to reverse the flow of illegals in the country. If you don't live where the problem is so far out of hand as it is, say in the Southwest, then you need to explore the facts before making these pathetic, bleeding-heart appeals to people for support.

Many studies have been done. The cost is no where near what is costing on the whole to keep them. Sorry but true.
Towns that have made stricken laws -are showing a recovery all ready. Towns were fencing has been installed have showed a recovery and less crime.
It does not have to be massive-at once.
I know what you want us to say-but the facts and results are not on your side.

This is making the assumption that you have to track them down....hold more rallies and about 1/2 of them will show up...they will surface....and we then can start moving them out....I would rather have MY tax dollars doing the right thing legally than supporting illegal actions.....and I'll bet I pay a whole lot more in taxes than you ever did.... I believe in the law and will support the law...and if my taxes went up to rid this nation of illegal mexicans, I would do it in a heartbeat.

In the long run we'd be SAVING BILLIONS if we DEPORT them!! The following results were in 2002, it's only worse now:

This study is one of the first to estimate the total impact of illegal immigration on the federal budget. Most previous studies have focused on the state and local level and have examined only costs or tax payments, but not both. Based on Census Bureau data, this study finds that, when all taxes paid (direct and indirect) and all costs are considered, illegal households created a net fiscal deficit at the federal level of more than $10 billion in 2002. We also estimate that, if there was an amnesty for illegal aliens, the net fiscal deficit would GROW to nearly $29 billion.

Among the findings:

• Households headed by illegal aliens imposed more than $26.3 billion in costs on the federal government in 2002 and paid only $16 billion in taxes, creating a net fiscal deficit of almost $10.4 billion, or $2,700 per illegal household........
If illegal aliens were given amnesty and began to pay taxes and use services like households headed by legal immigrants with the same education levels, the estimated annual net fiscal deficit would increase from $2,700 per household to nearly $7,700, for a total net cost of $29 billion.

• Costs increase dramatically because unskilled immigrants with legal status —what most illegal aliens would become— can access government programs, but still tend to make very modest tax payments.

• Although legalization would increase average tax payments by 77 percent, average costs would rise by 118 percent.

The Impact of Amnesty. Finally, our estimates show that amnesty would significantly increase tax revenue. Because both their income and tax compliance would rise, we estimate that under the most likely scenario the average illegal alien household would pay 77 percent ($3,200) more a year in federal taxes once legalized. While not enough to offset the 118 percent ($8,200) per household increase in costs that would come with legalization, amnesty would significantly increase both the average income and tax payments of ILLEGAL aliens.

On average, illegal households pay more than $4,200 a year in all forms of federal taxes. Unfortunately, they impose costs of $6,950 per household

One of the key findings of this report is that legalization would dramatically increase the costs of illegal immigration

We can afford to house all the Murders ect. In Prison Why should ILLEGALS get off. And have you ever considerd how much they Cost our economy and healthcare system. Kick them all out NOW. And evenif we started tommorrow its not like we could simply kick 20 million people out in a few days. Companies that are hiring illegals would simply have to get over it and hire LEGAL citizens.
