There's lots of stuff on biblical times on this question, so I post the ancient alternative. The Greeks didn't consider women to be human beings, they were in essence a mysterious creature through which children were gotten. The only way to be sure that child is yours was to control your woman and make punishment for adultry death. Of course this didn't apply to slaves and prostitutes. Men also did not need to be controled (though it was considered that sex with your wife was the ideal) It's not particularly religion that governed sex before marriage in those times. As far as dirty goes, it is an unclean activity, jogging is unclean because of the sweating too. But I assume you mean mental aspects of "dirty" Again it goes back to controling women by making sex as unappealing as possible.
You've got to realize back then that a woman had something men didn't, their children were definitely theirs, while men could never truly be sure. And men as animals are interested in their own progeny, not anyone elses.
Anyway, looking at the ancient times I am far more agreeable to the notion that men should cleave to their wives and become as one, Christianity gets overlooked for the strides it made in making men and women more equal. Women had souls and were considered just as worthy to hear the gospel as men. Men ideally should have only one wife (not always practiced, but...)
I say something that gets the greatest joy (children) should be consider sacred and shared with only those you consider worthy to be with for the rest of your life.

Q 1 - It's the puritanical and narrow minded that consider sex 'dirty'.
In Victorian Britain, sex was not to be enjoyed, it was for pro-creation only; 'you may have to do it, but you don't have to enjoy it' !

Q 2 - Before religion got a grip of modern society, there were no marriages, people had sex and lived happy but hard lives.
Religions then decided that it was better for people to get married so giving some sense of security to any offspring, so they dictated that sex before marriage was 'sinful' - so blaming the children for being 'bastards' !

Sex is a natural and enjoyable part of being 'human', there is nothing dirty or sinful in any of it's forms.

Here's my answer to why I think sex before marriage is against religion: Many jews are not allowed to eat pig because it is considered "unclean" (pigs wallow in their own filth and back in the old days there weren't many cleaning methods), and also way back ("bible times") people washed their hands a lot and didn't touch women when they had their periods because it was considered "unclean" (I'm not kidding, read Leviticus 15 in a Catholic bible). So, I think that since sex can spread disease, the people back then made a rule that you shouldn't have sex before marriage to stop the spread of illnesses...

This goes back 3000 years.
Somehow Men have always felt threatened by women and have been looking for ways to oppress them.
Making sex dirty and a sin against the church of Rome and a sure way to hell.
You have to remember God created all including sex.
Only mindless sex is a sin and mostly towards yourself.
Mindless sex does not satisfy and are the easy way to get an STD.
And AIDS is Hellish.
But you're now dealing with the heritage left to us by the Roman Empire who created the church of Rome to stop Rome itself from falling apart.
The Roman Empire had a very negative outlook on women but with enough whips you can make everybody see your point.
We have defeated the Emperor but forget to adjust our views back.

Just some one else's interpretation of things a long time ago.

Alot of our attitudes about sex date back to the Victorian era when people were a less open about sex, and that it should not be "discussed in mixed company" and so on.

Sex before marriage well you can thank King James for that, for the same reasons.

Sex in a part of life, with out it there would be no life, period!!!!!

Just know when to talk openly about it and when not to, maybe you can change a few attitudes along the way.

I know I have.

Dirty?? Well, I think that was just thought up to keep proper girls and boys from having sex before marriage. Over the years, talking about sex, became something you didn’t do if you had good tastes.

Another thing to keep in mind is sex is a primal instinct. Humans tend to repress out primal instincts in public. This is what most people feel separates humans from animals. The reason we defecate, urinate, and bathe in private is pretty much the same reason.

Why is sex before marriage taboo?

Keep in mind that the biblical laws were written by men, as a way to maintain power.

The most important things to men of the biblical times were family name and their family business. A mans’ fist born son was heir to most of his family business. If a man had a child with a prostitute, then later married, and had another son, who is the primary heir? In some cultures, they avoided this issue by declaring that ‘bastards’ are not entitled to the family business. Others did not.

Also keep in mind, that daughters will usually sold to their husbands. If your daughter already had a son, no man would buy her, because he didn’t want their to be a dispute over who will be the heir to his family business.

I think that many men consider ‘breaking in’ a virgin to be very important to them. They believe that a woman with no experience will never know if he is a lousy lover. She will never cheat on him because she will never know anyone that is better than him.

I just read some good stuff about that.....about controlling desire before it consumes you. All cultures have some restrictions, to keep the peace. Not all ban sex before marriage.

Imagine if there were NO restrictions? A father might get an erection and feel fine using it on his daughter. Or all kinds of things.

Just use common sense.

A woman's virginity is supposed to be sacred given only in marriage. "thus saith the bible" lol. AKA the "Mary the virgin" idea. Our parents instill this as something dirty and so does society because that is the way we are all taught. Even Atheists. It is to protect our children for the evils of the world and children too soon. Etc. We don't want to go to hell now do we.......

don't include "we" when i don't believe that crap.
from what i gather from that religion you speak of (not all religions are that way) they believe being human is wrong. like happiness or pleasure is wrong or disgraceful. to me having people living who just eat and eat for money that takes away from the ecosystem is wrong.
sex before marriage is wrong i guess because you might want another guy\lady in future so you suppose to make 1 impression to find the 1 you wanna be with. with that impression you suppose to derive everything about him\her and later they turn out to be different. by that religion code of conduct many people have bad marriages but they don't split because they want that religion happy not themselves....
