Dirt that enters your eyes will trigger blinking and tearing which will move the dirt particles out of your eyes. If you are unlucky, however, you could get a corneal abrasion (an eyeball scrape) that can be quite painful, but usually easily treated. If you are very unlucky, you could get an infection and risk losing your eyes. But most of us just bat our eyes repeatedly, cry a little bit, and everything clears up nicely.

Dirt constantly tries to enter the eye. But the eye has certain mechanisms that protect it from dirt. First the eyelashes trap a lot of dust. In a dusty windy day whenever dusty wind strikes our face our eyes close as a reflex. Now if still something enter the eye then it is washed away by tears.

You will tear up and the dirt comes out when the tear does, unless it is a lot of dirt, then you need to flush your eyes with water. But, you should never rub your eyes, you will scratch your cornea.

Your tears are designed to flush debris (dirt) from your eyes...unless you have problems with dry eyes (lack of tears), this should be automatic...try to resist rubbing them, this could scratch the delicate membranes!
