How was it impossible? We hear in the news all the time our how atmosphere is changing (Global Warming... which, btw, is natural for the earth to do... we're just speeding it up). We've seen it with our own eyes how nature is in control... ie: Hurricane Katrina is a prime example. I'm not quite sure why people think the atmosphere was completely void of life... when there are signs that it wasn't.

just a comment: there are some bacteria which can survive incredible amounts of heat and radiation and can even piece themselves together when broken apart. Additionally, many meteors are solid pieces of ice; thus, bacteria in the center could theoretically survive a trip through space.
