Train your pitbull like you would a poodle, or a Pomeranian... the breed generally isn't the problem. You could train a toy poodle to do the same job as the pitbull... and a pitbull has potential to be a loving family dog.

Though do watch out for aggression and try and prevent it. People are stupid enough to think pitbulls should be aggressive... and breed aggressive dog/aggressive dog. If your pitbull is a puppy, try and get him/her well socialized with other dogs, children, adults, ect. It'll make him/her feel less threatened later in its life.

....what worries me is that you didn't say 'train'. You said 'tame'. What on earth happened to the poor dog?

If the dog has gone feral and nasty from mishandling, it'll take a lot of devotion and careful bonding. You might need to treat the dog as if it were a wild animal, only small amounts of exposure at first, getting the dog used to you and learn that you're not a threat. Unfortunately, if the dog is aggressive and won't let anyone handle it, you might be the only one it'll trust after the bonding process, and that does mean slowly introducing the dog to any family members or pets... and keeping it away from other strange dogs, kids, adults.

Another thing might be that the dog might be sick or hurt. Perhaps it's feral because it's in pain? You might want to see if there's any signs of pain or discomfort... limping, vomiting, wounds or scars, runny stools or constipation... you get the idea. Then you definably should get a vet to come see the dog.

But trust me... teaching an abused or unhappy dog to trust, even if it's only one person, is worth it.

A pit bull is no worse then any other dog. The only pit bulls i have come across were very sweet and nice which reflects the owners. Dogs will become defiant and mean if you let them be and don't do anything about it. It is not good to praise negative behavior. If this dog is older then it could be a little harder if not impossible to tame it. You can try obedience classes and you may have to get in touch with a canine behaviorist, check your local vet. In some cases, no amount of work will help.

The same way you tame any other dog. Pit Bulls have bad reps because stupid, ignorant, cruel people give it to them. Any dog will bite if its provoked. Pit Bulls just know how to say, "OK Buddy, but this is the last time you're going to mess with me"

I have two Pits - they require attention, love, and lots of hugs and kisses and don't like it when you give it to another dog in front of them.

You can ask anyone that's owned a healthy pit bull, they are big beautiful babies and a joy to have around. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Start young. You must let them know you are the boss! There is a really good book called bully breeds. I got mine at Pet Smart. It will explain the breed to you in detail. They are a people dog. They grow very attached to their human family. They are aggressive with other dogs. Not humans. You must socialize them alot! We had a pit bull for 14 years and now we have an American Bulldog.

How do you tame a pit-bull? 2-3 shots from a magnum should suffice.

if its already an adult, good luck. but if you have a puppy, a lot of patience. I have a ten month old and a ten week old. my ten month old is very well trained. we did not take them to classes, which is another option. we used the reward system. when they are doing a good job, like peeing outside tell them good boy/girl. use training treats. you are going to have to use force also. pit bulls want to please their masters. so they will try very hard to listen and do well. they are loyal. you also have to socialize them. if you dont, when they get around other dogs, or humans they very likely will attack. mine has been around a 3 day old baby, three year olds, other dogs. hes awesome. hes not a good guard dog, but he will and has protected me. if you dont have the patence for this dog, either dont get it, or pay for training classes.

Put a 30-30 to it's head and pull the trigger and get a real dog like a Siberian Husky.

With patience. It is best to consult a local animal behaviorist to get some good tips. But otherwise, just the same type of training as any other puppy.

When their young bring out some meat and give it to them. Then take it back. When they first try to snap at your hand slap the **** out of them repeatedly. That will let em know who's in charge. They have to be nice to you to eat. Oh and its also good to have some cold water nearby if they attack.
