Why must there be a god? Are people incapable of being cooperative and productive members of a supportive society without the over riding hand of a father figure/judge? Can't people use reason and intelligence to figure out a way to have a functional life without the duality of a good/evil superstition?

I think you know the answer to your own question, but as most of us do, we just say in order to incite a reaction.

Some do, and some cannot. I personally can behave cooperatively and productively without a God. But for some it is too hard to bear. Due to poverty or a bad life, they live in confidence that they will live a good life because they have been good, because its fair.

The Universe tends to unfold itself the way it should. Justice prevails because all humans have an in built injustice meter, when you are done injustice and humiliated, you feel anger, when you are done justice, recognized and appreciated, you feel happy. It is about appreciating the self-worth of the human being.

However, there are always people who do not think so---they are too stupid and its not fair, they are too poor and others are born rich and its not fair. Others are bad and get good stuff, while they are good and do not.

About intelligence: I think we were created a lot more equal than you might think. But in essence some develope certain skills from a young age due to a series of random events that made them corregate their brain into a particular skill-set.

The people that get high SAT's are not smarter than someone who does not get such high scores, they are merely more skilled at detecting wrong answers due to the culture they have been brought up with, random events that formed their brain during youth, or hard study (or combination of those at that).

Its just skill. Does not have anything to do with intelligence.

Second, the rich are not necessarily any happier. In fact, America is many times richer than 2 decades a go, yet many more times uhappy (I don't know the exact number, but take my word for it). It was found to be sexually frustrated, needing more, valueing self-worth (or self-esteem) a lot lower than previous generations, and generally unconfident.

The thing people have to remmember, is that you do not NEED a hot girlfriend or be incredibly rich to be happy, because quite frankly, that brings more unhappines EVEN AFTER YOU ACHEIVE THAT, than if you simply have someone you are compatible with emotionally and a good salary..

In fact, the richest families are known to be some of the most unhappy---money destroys people.

bad and get good: This is only temporary---and KARMA ALWAYS comes back. why? because you sense injustice, and if you do, many others do as well, and sooner or later, you will all react to this "bad person" in some way to make his/her life worse as "it should be" because he/she does not deserve a good life.

We are all really a hive mind...and our programming protocal is emotion---a hardwired justice.

We just have to evolve, even without a God, we can do great things.

But let others that need to beleive, beleive, for it brings them happiness. And no one should take that away.

Evolution says we must change our way of thinking to more advanced beleifs. But at this current stage in human history, there is enough info for people to make their own conclusion ---but especially---that human society will always exist because of our hardwired programming---a mother will take care of its baby, and we will not stab in the back, because its against our nature, those that go against their nature, will be eradicated because they do not benefit society, and naturally, we will tend to have an adverse reaction due to our survival instinct (this player does not help us, he is selfish and a coward, we cannot have him in the genepool for our own survival as a race)...otherwise we would not have existed and gotten this far in time.

Everyone is so comfortable. Civilization gets them all comfy and warm. Then things start to happen, someone gets cancer, someone gets old and kind of desperate about it, depression, fighting, war, earthquakes, famine, murder, etc.

Until it happens to you, it's not too bad. After all, everythings fine.

Hey! Maybe we can solve all this war in Lebanon that is about to spread across the Middle East with cooperation, and by being productive members of a supportive society without the over riding hand of a father figure/judge.

We'll use reason and intelligence to figure out a way to have a functional life without the duality of a good/evil superstition and get out of this war. They'll listen. They are only trying to kill eachother.

There does not need to be a God in order for people to work and live together co-operatively and peacefully. The universe is perfectly capable of functioning without an unseen helping hand. Unfortunately, the people who believe there needs to be a God are already beyond reason -- and for some reason they are proud of it. And they are usually the ones causing all the trouble.

To answer your second question, NO: I don't think we will ever figure a way to get rid of superstition in favor of reason and intelligence. We can only try to mitigate the effects of such beliefs.

Yes, there must be a God. World history has demonstrated that we cannot get along and that we cannot take care of ourselves. There must be a supreme authority to keep us in some degree of civility. God has to place a limit on evil or we would destroy ourselves. This limit is death. We can live for a maximum of only 120 years. This limits how long an evil person can walk the earth doing wicked things. If a man like Adolph Hitler could have lived forever, think of the consequences we would all be living under today. I am grateful that we have a God that loves us and is merciful, and that also is willing to chastise us and limit our ability to harm one another. Jesus loves you.

Yes, there has to a controlling factor otherwise we will run into problems more often. It does not mean that we are incapable of running our lives. We do have the capacity. But there are so many factors that govern our society, that without the presence of an Almighty God, we will be running from pillar to post for everything. Moreover, God has created us out of love. He keeps watch over us, as a loving Father, seeing that we don't fall into wayside ditches. Even if we fall, He has promised in the Bible that He will never leave us nor forsake us. The Bible also says in Psalms 14:1 - The fools think there is no God....Whoever thinks that one can manage one's life without the overpowering presence of God, is just deluding himself/herself.

Because without God we are nothing. We have nothing, we cannot live and truly feel free to do the things God wants us to do.

Do you notice that people around you seem happy but they are not? Most of the time most people are just surviving and not truly living. They want to do something, but we have been trained to go to school and get a job. That is a stupid predisposition of the world.

Get this, honestly we do not know anything. I do not know what fills your heart - I mean HONESTLY. I am not talking in the immediate - I am talking what fills that emptyness in your heart - what is it that excites you and makes you drop everything and do just that?

Here is another question and I want you to start looking around you. Look at the people who you come in contact with. Do you see a "dead" individual? Do you see someone who is trying to do the things that may make them happy, but they end up being unhappy? Take a look at Donald Trump - is he happy? I mean truly happy? I doubt it. I doubt that a man that is happy would make a contract with His wife to be married for 5 years and then divorce her to find another young woman. I doubt that he is happy because no matter what he needs more money and power to let others see what he can do and you can do too.

Money does not make you happy
Sex cannot fill the emptyness in your heart
Things that can be bought cannot fill your heart because they do not last.

The love of God can fill that "hole" and is the only thing that lasts. Satan will continue to tell you things and sell you things that will satisfy your immediate needs and wants, but they do not last and you will continue to spend your time and money aquiring things that do not last.

Lastly, I am heading in a direction to be that productive/cooperative individual. That is filled with the things of God and not of this world.

Take a class in philosophy. Look at the basis of nazism, marxism, etc. These are godless political philosophies that believe you can sacrifice people for the good of those in power. Socialism and many governments today believe in ethnic cleansing, a byproduct of evolutionary thinking. Look at nihilism and existentialism and survival of the fittest thinking. These are valid philosophies, if God does not exist.

On the other hand, if a creator created us, then by definition, a creator creates for a reason. Therefore, we are here for a reason and need to discover our purpose and destiny. Human life is precious, for it is created. The purpose of government is to protect individual rights, to allow us to reach our potential.

Sorry, but it has been proven that your reality leads to great tragedy and suffering. You cannot get to a good world without God. It is hard enough to do it with God. However, I am far better off, as are my loved ones, in a society that believes in the inherent sanctity of human life. Yes, I believe there is a God and must be one, otherwise, life is meaningless. Without God, we are just random quirks of nature, which by the way takes great faith to believe. I do not believe that of myself, or of my children.

By the way, google "evolution, fact or theory" and you will find that a natural cause for evolution has never been verified, and in fact makes no sense. Thus, if we did not get here naturally, we were created.

Last, do not confuse a creator with religious dogma. I know I am created, but I am not ruled by God. He has given me free will. I believe in God willingly and since He is far wiser than me, I go to Him in prayer for counsel. Read proverbs which is a great place to start, do not read the new testament until you are ready.

Take care!

You may have a point.
But I will ask you, Why must there be a government?
Without gov't, Anarchy is rampant. With Anarchy, Do you really think soceity would function well with no guidelines?

You know the hearts of men. There are bad people in this world. Now, who is to say murder is wrong, or stealing? If we don't have a system of rules and guidelines to follow, chaos is inevitable.

Yes, people can live without the belief in God, but it is not logical to live without rules. Our gov't is like you mentioned, "fatherfigure/judge". Without it, no one would be in jail or responsible for ill deeds. You must have a superior source to base what "good/ evil" is.

Yes, I'm afraid there must. This human conflict has been going on since the dawn of time. It's not going to get any better. How many times did God have to pull the Isrealites out of they're troubles in the desert? He had to give them water from a rock for cryin' out loud! Sorry but without God in MY life I know I'd be lost and very frustrated that I had no "Higher Power" to turn to in impossibe situations!

Beliefs not founded in logic cannot be debated using logic.

>Jess H
>how could there not be i mean every thing works together and
>how could something just evolve into what we have today?

>I-o-d-tiger
>Where the idea of Good and evil come from anyway. How did
>we get reason and intelligence without a God to create them?

Just because you don't know the answer doesn't mean the answer defaults to "God". It just means you don't know the answer.

The problem is that we humans think that we are all reasonable and intelligent. But when it comes to the real matter none of us are that reasonable
This is a dilemma faced by any person with a scientific mind. I share same trouble. But I think the reason is
1)we don't have a clear evidence as to the absence of GOD at the same time we don't have evidence as to presence either.
2) We all have our own share of troubles as well as dreams in life.Religion promises answer to these even though we can't scientifically accept or reject it.
3) Religion says unless we follow a particular life style we might be punished (or our beloved). If we follow them we will be blessed. We might get rewards either in this world or after death. We want blessings and fear the wrath of God.
4)We all know death is an absolute truth even though we don't like it.Science doesn't give even a hope of immortality for time being. But religion promises life after death. We all fear death and love immortality.
5)Religion is the strongest force that can inculcate moral values in a society.Pure science may not be able to do that
6)Religion gives us more freedom to dream of future.Science gives you only reality which means there will be limit to dreams. This freedom itself is a great advantage of religion.
7) Even in its present state science has not many good answers to even simple problems as to why or how the universe came to being or its course. So science won't make you satisfied in itself.
8)Ultimately what we want is a clarity of mind (which science claims to give) , peace of mind, a feel of control over ourself and nature rather than being controlled.
9)We may never know why a person made of some chemicals love/hate another with similar chemical composition. We don't know why Darwinian theory is obeyed by organisms.Science may never create a computer which can appreciate beauty/poetry.
10) BUT I'M NEVER FOR BLIND FAITH, IF NOT FOR SCIENCE HUMANITY MAY NOT HAVE SURVIVED OR WILL SURVIVE
So my dear friend it all ultimately boils to your mind .You can't rationalize religion with science nor science with religion.
Even you may not be able to analyse religion with religion or science with science.Even quantum theory and theory of relativity fail to come close together. We need science and religion but how to balance is the critical question.
MY ANSWER IS DEPEND ON SCIENCE FOR AS MANY THINGS AS POSSIBLE.SCIENCE IS WHAT WE CAN DO/ WHAT WE CANT. DO WHAT YOU AS A HUMAN BEING IS CAPABLE. LEAVE ONLY THE REST TO GOD AND DO LEAVE
