Your local paper and post fliers at the supermarkets.

Check with your local animal shelters and tell the police. Many shelters put unclaimed pets up for adoption in as little as 7 or 10 days. Some unscruputlous people will bring a "found" pet to a distant shelter and when turning it in say they want to adopt. They can legally adopt the pet once the local waiting period is exceeded.

If you pet is not microchipped there is little recourse to reclaim a pet that has been adopted by someone else from a shelter.

Put flyers on the phone poles in a large area around where the pet was last seen. Put flyers on the bulletin boards in vet offices, the animal shelters, grocery stores, laundrymats, and in the front window of any stores that will let you. The idea is to get the pet's name and face out there to as many people as possible as soon as possible.

The flyer should start out big and attention catching: REWARD!!! LOST DOG!!! From there, you can put down the details. Include a picture of the pet. Make sure you put at least a couple of phone numbers down. Make little tear off strips at the bottom of the page for phone numbers.

First.. if you found a pet, go to the local vet clinic. The pet might have a chip under his fur that identifies him and his owner. The chip can be read by a reader at the vet clinic. I think you can take the pet to an animal shelter and have them read the chip too.
If that fails to find the owner, run an add in the paper, post signs, work of mouth, inform the vet clinic and the pound and shelters in your area.
Really all the same apply if you've lost a pet. Check with vet, shelters, news paper, word of mouth.

Start with your local newspaper. Go to the website of your town's Humane Society. Get onto websites for local radio stations. (I think all these post your ads for free b/c it IS a "lost and found ad"!)
Put up fliers at your place of business, on poles, restaurants, police station, fire station, EVERYWHERE!!
In MY town, we have a TV station that plays local happenings - you might even check into that, if your town has such a station on air.
Church bulletin
Work place newsletter

Well, GOOD LUCK! I don't whether you've "lost" or found", but I DO hope your issue is resolved. Nothing makes me more sad than lost pets!

Probably best to post it in your county's suburban journal, or independent newspaper; whichever one you have that is narrowed down as closely as possible to your particular area. Also, you may want to pass out some flyers in your neighborhood; even if the pet doesn't belong to one of your close neighbors, they may know the person who owns the animal (give the best description possible, and add a picture if you can). Hope this helps.

Your best bet is a public place that is frequently populated such as a supermarket, library or a local convenience store.
