Many doctors believed extreme obesity was due to hormonal abnormalities or other distinct conditions.

Now many believe it is a combination of lifestyle factors and genetics, as well as a propensity for some people's bodies to be hyper-efficient at storing calories. This tendency would benefit people in societies where starvation is rampant but is a huge problem in developed countries where food is plentiful and lifestyles are increasingly sedentary.

So many reasons!http://www.nutrition4health.org/NOHAnews/NNSp94AmericansFat.htmThis is an interesting link but also we (Americans) have such a poor sense of combining foods properly for optimal digestion. We also eat way too many "fake" and highly processed foods which become utterly indigestible in the body and ultimately go into fat storage for the bodies inability to know what to do with them! Then of course there is the huge portion sizes!

What do you base this on? I would actually guess that Samoans are the fattest. We probably obsess about it the most and tend to have more people that have bad habits with regards to diet and exercise.

Because there's so much food available to them. If you go into any decent commercial restaurant in America, they'll pile up your plate so high, that you'll undoubtedly feel guilty if you waste it, so why not eat it? Of course, you could take it home, but why bother? Look at all the buffet restaurants in major cities. All you can eat for one reasonably low price! Who can resist? I mean after all, you want to get your money's worth, right? And just turn on your T.V......temptation is everywhere! Need I say more? Welcome to the land of plenty!

We have a very different style of living than the rest of the world. Some of us are not terribly patient.
1/4 of people who are obese are compulsive over-eaters - people with an actual eating disorder. They are the same as people with bulimia, they just don't throw up. They should not be discriminated against, just like people with bulimia should not be discriminated against.

They are richest in the world, therefore they might be overeating.
They are most busy, therefore not getting time for exercise.
Concept of health may be wrong. Some people feel that fatter the man better the health!

They're not, and the tort lawyers that have agendas to make millions of dollars by suing fast food restaurants have been circulating their propaganda for the past 5 years, and only idiots would believe their hypocrisy.

That seems to be the down-side of a high quality of life. Less hard labor, more abundance of food, and if a person isn't careful, it is easy in that situation to put on the pounds.

Because we have sunk into indulging into food and not working it off. Our fast food chains are sooo high in fats and calories, one meal can just about take up your daily allowance. And people dont work like they used to. They pay people to do the work for them.
