Has anyone had retinal detachment surgery in the form of a scleral buckle? Stories of post surgery...good, bad, indifferent...
My husband had this done two days ago, just wondering what others have to say about their experiences. Thanx.

Good results in retinal detachment surgery depend upon several factors:
(1) Duration- The sooner the patient is operated upon, the better the expected result.
(2) Location- Detachment farther away from central vision give better results than those located near the center of the eye.
(3) Size- Small detachments give better results than very large ones.
(4) General state of the retina- The less the degree of retinal degeneration; the better the postoperative outook. Generally, the younger the patient, the less retinal degeneration.

Oh God! I had a minor retinal detachment surgery when I was 16 (I am very near-sighted, so my eyes are very oblong I guess.)
I'm not sure if mine was the same as your husband's, but they "spot froze" the two holes with liquid nitrogen, which is like negative 30 degrees, and it KILLED. I had to wear a patch over my eye for about a week, and put some sort of antibiotic on my eye, and of course took some meds, but it was a reasonable recovery. I still have to go to the eye doctor once a year to have them checked.

Not sure if this was the same procedure...but if so, the recovery is about a week, and involves some slight pain, but is bearable.
