It is a myth, and it is based on the fact that a cat always gets on the feets. Read this one, just4fun..
How to Give Your Cat a Pill
Grasp cat firmly in your arms. Cradle its head on your elbow, just as if you were giving baby a bottle. Coo confidently, "Thats a nice kitty." Drop pill into its mouth. Retrieve cat from top of lamp and pill from under sofa.
Follow same procedure as in 1, but hold cat's front paws down with left hand and back paws down with elbow of right arm. Poke pill into its mouth with right forefinger.
Retrieve cat from under bed. Get new pill from bottle. (Resist impulse to get new cat.)
Again proceed as in 1, except when you have cat firmly cradled in bottle-feeding position, sit down on edge of chair, fold your torso over cat, bring your right hand over your left elbow, open cat's mouth by lifting the upper jaw and pop the pill in - quickly. Since your head is down by your knees, you won't be able to see what you're doing. That's just as well.
Leave cat hanging on drapes. Leave pill in your hair.
If you're a woman, have a good cry. If you're a man, have a good cry.
Now pull yourself together. Who's the boss here anyway? Retrieve cat and pill. Assuming position 1, say sternly, "Who's the boss here, anyway?" Open cat's mouth, take pill and...Oooops!
This isn't working, is it? Collapse and think. Aha! Those flashing claws are causing the chaos.
Crawl to linen closet. Drag back large beach towel. Spread towel on floor.
Retrieve cat from kitchen counter and pill from potted plant.
Spread cat on towel near one end with its head over long edge.
Flatten cat's front and back legs over its stomach. (Resist impulse to flatten cat.)
Roll cat in towel. Work fast; time and tabbies wait for no man - or woman.
Resume position 1. Rotate your left hand to cat's head. Press its; mouth at the jaw hinges like opening the petals of a snapdragon.
Drop pill into cat's mouth and poke gently. Voila! It's done.
Vacuum up loose fur (cat's). Apply bandages to wounds (yours).
Take two aspirins and lie down. Take extended rest.

It's sad, but not true, cats die just like the rest of living beings. The myth about cats having 9 lives it's because they are very resistant, they can be hurt more hard than other animals and if they fall from heights, they don't have big problems. But, I saw 2 days ago a cat run over by a car, it gave me a sick feeling, it was still alive when I saw it first. I pass the place 1 hour later and it died, so... Cats don't have 9 lives.

The nine lives thing is a folk tale. Cats are very good at getting themselves out of scrapes and healing themselves from illness, accident that people began to say they had 9 lives. Cats can survive falls because they instinctively spread out their legs. All the loose skin on the cat spreads out and acts like sort of a parachute, slowing kitty's fall. This is why some cats survive a long fall and other cats go splat from a short fall, the short fall does not give them the time too spread out.
I saw this on a documentary on PBS- Do not drop a cat off a ten story building to test this out

Well I have to say.. your question is really one that a lot of ppl wonder about. Why do ppl say cats have nine lives. Well.. it's because, if they fall from above two or three feet they have the ability to right themselves in mid air and land on their feet. BUT don't drop your cat from heights. They can sustain serious injury. They are gentle and fragile creatures with an uncanny ability to land upright if dropped from over two feet (there has to be enough time for them to turn around upright in mid air.. BUT... if they fall from too high they will just splat like anything else.. too low and same thing.. lots of broken bones and internal injuries.
Your friends are pulling your leg.. so just say "you're pulling my leg" when they tell you unbelievable stories like this.

Oh no it is true! if you do not think so take your beloved cat up 10 stories and toss him over the side.
You have to be kidding me to even ask this crap! go take your medication and then sit in the corner. you are not allowed on the computer for the rest of the day.
If you ask ridiculously stupid questions like this again you will be grounded for a week!
