If somebody walks into a corner grocery store and tells the store owner, "You need to give me 10% of your earnings every week or something bad is going to happen to you," we would call that blackmail.

Ten percent is the tithe and anything above that is the offering. Remember what Jesus said, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." If you don't have 10% in money to give then fine, the bible says "ten percent of all income." So if God gives you the day that you have to day then you should probably "tithe" (which means "tenth") your day to him. Whatever "Income" that you have you should "tithe" with a cheerful and willing heart. God doesn't like it when you tithe, because you feel that you have been forced to. He would prefer the happy tither, just read his word.

You are reading the old testament. The new testament says to tithe what you can, with a cheerful heart. We are no longer under the law.
God would rather we tithe our hearts and humble ourselves before him. Instead of following old testatment rules, we should be listening to God and giving money where he directs us.
One day I was driving to work and listening to the radio singing praises to God. Suddenly I knew I was supposed to turn the music off! I did. I sat quietly and listened to God. He gave me the name of a woman at work. So I prayed for her.
When I got to work, she was there. Only the two of us. I sat there and realized I was to give her a fairly nice sum of money. Stunned, the amount was given to me by God. So I wrote her a check, explained what had happened, and we both cried and hugged.
I never did any math. God doesn't either. He just tells us what to do. Our job is to obey him.

God only asked for 10%. No amount of tithe will be acceptable to him if it is given only to prove that I am serious. It has to be given willingly and with faith that God will use it to his will.

Read the Bible closer, look up 'tithing' it has been misinterpreted for the purpose of supporting the church. Yes I'm a believer, but I give to those in need, not to some church so they can get new carpeting or add on a room.

God asks for 10%. Being serious is showing faith, following His word...not merely giving an extra penny in the offering plate.

No, I'm not going to follow some legalistic formula when I decide what to give to God's kingdom work. Instead I'll do what I always do and follow the outline given in this passage.
2 Corinthians 9:7 Each one must give as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 9 As it is written, "He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever." 10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
Tithing is like paying a bill. God doesn't want us to treat our relationship with Him in the area of giving like some burdensome chore. He asks us to prayerfully decide what we can give with a cheerful heart as our spiritual act of worship and trust that He will continue to meet us at the point of our needs.

I do not have to prove anything to God or you or anyone else. Tithing has nothing to do with taking God or his word seriously. Jesus knows my love for him and by commitment to his gospel because he knows my heart. Jesus loves you.
