The Methodist church has a cross with red wrapped around it..looks like a flame. Could easily be in rememberance of the persecutions of the RCC when Protestants and Baptists fought against the catholics to remove themselves (Protestants) from the RCC or retain their beliefs (Baptists).

I believe you may be referring to the symbol for the Methodist Church. . .the "red flames" symbolize the Holy Spirit in action in man's life. . .as he bares his own cross in this human experience. . .but not alone. . .for Christ promised that he would send his Comforter (the Holy Spirit) to help men.
