Looking for a cheap used Volvo wagon or VW Passat and everythining in my budget is 90k miles or more... how relaible are these cars with that many miles on them. Can I expect 170k out of a Passat?

If it has had regular maint.,it will go to 200,000 with no problem.In a 98,the belt was supposed to be changed by 80,000 if a 1.8T engine.You do not want it to break with the engine running.I have a 1999 Passat with over 100,000 miles on it.Runs like a top! vwjcook@yahoo.com

They are extremely reliable 170k providing cam belt has been changed is extremely likely that this will be exceeded.As for parts designed to fail that's bollocks . Have owned Vw and Audis for many years they have all given excellent service Regards Mick

VW's have a reputation for being expensive to repair and often need repairs. The engineers desighned parts to be just barely capable of doing the job. With normal use the parts are failing on a regular basis.

Because of the Holocaust during world war II I don't like Volkswagen

150k 160k if you change cam belts and pulleys regularly
