Love the new puppy. You can still think about your dog, great memories too. You don't have to forget the dog, or not feel sad. Cry away if you want to, but you have a new friend who wants to love you, so give it a try. Mom is just trying to lessen your pain.

I'm not sure what your question is. If you're looking for puppy training advice, I'll try to help.

First, work on housebreaking (with a crate!), teaching him his name and coming when you call (especially at breakfast and dinner time). Puppy training is mainly done with treats - not leash corrections. They are very willing to learn for the first few months. Take advantage of this time - it won't come again.

Then at three months, start working on basic obedience. Heel, sit, stay, down, come. Puppies have VERY short attention spans. Make your sessions short and fun - five minutes a few times a day. When he's doing that pretty well, you can add in some tricks.

Most dogs require a LOT of exercise or they can have serious behavior problems from the pent up energy.
By the time he's six months old, you're going to have to be taking him for a LONG (30 minute) walk every day. By the time he's a year old, it will have to be a strenuous RUN or (30 minute) ball-playing session.

You should read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com

Love the new puppy... he didn't do anything wrong. the new doggie might just bring you some joy... accept him into the family..
When you lose a family member.. pet or otherwise, it takes time to get through the grief.. but that doesn't mean life stands still.
Enjoy the little hero your mom got you.. I bet he's just the cutest.
I'll tell you a wee story
When I had my first child I was worried that my heart couldn't wrap around ANOTHER person. I already loved my husband soooo much.. but when she was born FWUMP... my heart instantly grew to encompass her. THEN I got pregnant for my second child..and again I worried about how my heart would manage to love yet ANOTHER person.. then my son was born and FWUMP.. my heart grew to embrace him too. So I learned that my heart has the capacity to grow and love many many ppl to the same degree.
So I'd say.. let your heart love that little new puppy.. and don't let go of the love you had for your doggie that just died. You're heart can handle it!
:>

Lavish all of the love you felt for your dog onto this new puppy. Remember that this new puppy isn't a replacement for your dog, but a new part of your family.

Enjoy it!

Love the new pup, play with him/her, feed it, walk it, relish in the fact that your mother lets you have a dog - not all do.
