Hi first of best wishes for a speedy recovery .
Laminectomy is the removal of most of the bony arch, or lamina, of a vertebra (Laminectomy is most often done when back pain fails to improve with more conservative medical treatment.) The surgery takes 1-3 hours. My husband's surgery was about 2 hours even though it felt like more to me . He started walking around the same day and was out in 3 days .

I just had back surgery 5 months ago, my surgery took 3-4 hours, they made me get up and walk that evening. I am not going to lie to you, it hurts like hell til your muscles start to heal. Just getting up, you have to log roll....well its pretty bad, but try to keep her up walking around or sitting in a chair. The pain was really bad for about 4 days, after that I was able to get up on my own. But it was worth it to me. I have a different kinda pain now, but not as bad as before, most of the time I am pain free. I was really scared to have the surgery. Just don't let her lie in bed when she gets home or it will take longer to recover. I had to go stay with my mom after my surgery for about a week, then I came home....I have a 6 year old at home, that's why I was so scared to have the surgery. try not to worry, it you wanna email me and talk, my email address is masters101@sbcglobal.net. by the way, when is she scheduled for surgery? Best of luck

I had this back in 1975. I am now 49. I can tell her to watch her weight and not do heavy work. I do get back aches and did not take care of it when I was younger. I have always been muscular and that may have hurt me in the long run. I don't know how it would affect me at my current age. Just have her stay in shape and keep her weight down.

I would exhaust ALL other possibilities before undergoing laminectomy. I would at the very least visit a good chiropractor who does X-rays to get a second opinion.

Two of my patients have got spinal surgery in India. One was treated for spondylolistheis by spinal fusion and the other for herniated disc by laminectomy. Both of them are very happy with the results.Their pain and other symptoms due to nerve compression have totally gone.
Spinal Surgery is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges spine surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as spine surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website.
The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your spine surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.both my patients had gone to India through the forerunners healthcare company.i strongly recommend you to talk to this company, checkout your options with surgery from them.

Ignore Shruti's answer--he answers every question the same way. He is not trying to really answer your question...he just wants to drive traffic to his website. Go to his Q&A section and check out his list of answers...
I'm on a mission to get him to stop!!!!
