P.M. has it right as he was an illegitmate child and therefore did not have his father's last name. His mother called him de Vinci so that he would have a name. In those days children could not just have their mother's last name. He needed a name to be recognized by and I suppose his father would not recognize Leonardo as his. He may have been married to someone else at the time.
