He's from a city in Italy called Vinci. They didn't have surnames back then and people were named for what they did for a living or where they were from. Da Vinci simply translates to Of Vinci.

P.M. has it right as he was an illegitmate child and therefore did not have his father's last name. His mother called him de Vinci so that he would have a name. In those days children could not just have their mother's last name. He needed a name to be recognized by and I suppose his father would not recognize Leonardo as his. He may have been married to someone else at the time.
